Calcium supplements may raise risk of heart attack

Calcium supplements, which many people consume hoping to ward off osteoporosis, may increase the risk of heart attack by as much as 30 percent, researchers reported Friday...(snip)

...While experts are not certain about the biological mechanism by which calcium supplements may damage the body, studies in the past have linked high levels of blood calcium to more heart attacks and damage to blood vessels, Reid said.

"When you take calcium supplements, your blood calcium level goes up over the following four to six hours and goes up to the top end of the normal range," he said.

"That doesn't happen when you have calcium to eat in your diet because the calcium from food is very slowly absorbed and so the blood calcium level hardly changes at all." (excerpt)

Double your Vit-D, which is needed to process Calcium, and the problem is gone.

Not necessarily.

While many people are deficient in Vit D, even more people are deficient in Magnesium.

And it’s the calcium-magnesium cycles that control muscles contracting/relaxing.

I’ve seen numbers like 70% of Americans have a magnesium deficiency. And I believe it, because people don’t like to have hard water coming out of their taps.

I believe this report, because I have tried to take different kinds of calcium and would actually have heart palpitations several hours later. The same thing happens with most one-a-day vitamins. I can tolerate B-Complex. Is it possible that the whole supplemental movement is more harmful than helpful? Could be.

It's possible that you simply don't need the extra calcium. If I don't take my calcium with Vit D I get horrible cramps in my toes and calves.

One of the problems with magnesium is that it’s difficult to get enough, at least short term. The body doesn’t like to have excess magnesium in the blood/fluids, but cells themselves love the stuff.

Too much magnesium at any one time will give you the runs like you never even thought possible!

Potassium is much the same. Your body doesn’t want it so much extra-cellular, but does want it in the cells.

Green leafy vegetables. Seafood where you eat the bones like sardines.

Magnesium is the central molecule in the chlorophyll ring.

In fact chlorophyll and hemoglobin are almost identical, but plants use magnesium to make chlorophyll, and animals use iron instead, and that makes hemoglobin.

CoQ10 is good for leg cramps caused by Crestor, Lipator and other drugs like it. Also good for your memory and heart.

I take only coral calcium with D, plus additional 12,000 units of D. Regular calcium supplements cause gas and bloating. My doctor said I had to take the calcium, as mine is low, and I don’t do much dairy.

Drink your milk. This is good for the dairy industry!

I have IBS so I have a problem anyway. I can’t do much dairy. I also have osteopenia so I was told to take calcium with D. At least 1200 mgs. I was taking CoQ10 but quit. Guess I’ll start taking it again.

I take magnesium citrate with the calcium citrate - 200 mg in the AM and 200 mg in the PM for a while. I haven’t noticed any difference in bowel function.

Try a teaspoon of Milk of Magnesia.

But don’t do it if you have anything important to do for the next 30 hours or so...

And don’t say I didn’t warn you!!

-A lot of supplements aren't what they are cracked up to be.
I think the best way to get our vitamins are just a well balanced diet. -Although like most, I do take Vitamin D, fish oil/ omega 3, food sources are probably still better, I think...

OK I'm good then, I eat a salad about 5 nights a week and plenty of other green vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts etc. The doc checked my vit. D last year and said I was low normal so I take 1000 units per day of
D. I am pretty old (70) and my bones are great, if I can just stay out of car wrecks I should be around for a few more years. :)

Pretty much any form of nuts or seeds are also high on the list.

And one of my faves - even though some folks rail against it - is also way up there!

Java!! Good ole coffee!
Loaded with antioxidants. Also, tons of magnesium and potassium in good bioavailable forms.

Because coffee is made from a bean, a seed... it has all the good things it takes to make a plant grow.

Great news I drink 4 strong cups of coffee every morning but I never realized it was good for me. I much prefer getting my vitamins and minerals out of my diet than from a pill.

I even have a hard time tolerating the “Slow-Mag” delayed release product but seem to be getting used to it now.

Another issue for those of us who have to take a PPI - Proton Pump Inhibitor such as Prilosec, Nexium or Prevacid is that they interfere with calcium absorption over the long term. So we are really at risk of Ca deficiency.

a good multivitamin is essential.........why take just calcium? I have to take something as I have to take a diuretic. some of us have no choice.

I also have lactose intolerance and IBS. The Digestive Advantage probiotic product with lactase has been helping on both counts. And yes you should resume the CoQ10.

I don’t take it continuously but only when my system gets screwed up to the point that I don’t have much choice. IBS, of course, has many forms and causes and no probiotic will effectively address all of those. In my case, much of it seems to be excessive autonomic nervous system activity and that never goes away. But for the intestinal flora aspect of it, I guess the product helps both of us to some degree. One thing about Digestive Advantage with Lactase that I really like is not having to take lactase pills before every encounter with dairy products.

I take the Digestive Advantage IBS everyday. If I don’t, I pay for it. A lot of foods irritate me. Unfortunately. I can usually tell an attack is coming and sometimes an anti-gas pill will stop it. But not always.

Ha! Ha! Ha!

“Balanced diet”.

Is that what the “tooth fairy” eats?

Which tooth fairy?
The 19 year old female tooth fairy in good health?
Or the 27 year old female tooth fairy with early diabetes who happened to get preggers?

The 30 year old male body builder tooth fairy?
The same 30 year old guy when he’s forty?
When he’s 50?

Ask a doctor what to eat. If he says “a balanced diet”, keep pushing and ask him for more specifics. Pretty soon, he’ll Hmmm... and awww... and ummm... more than a 13 year old trying to explain to his mom why he was out till 3 AM.

There is NO SUCH THING as a “general balanced diet”.
Each persons dietary needs vary depending on age, health, amount of activity/exercise, and a whole ton of other factors.

Now, one more thing.

When you are young, you MIGHT MAYBE be able to get everything you need from a mythical diet.

But as you age, say get into your thirties or so, it is IMPOSSIBLE to get everything you need from your diet. IMPOSSIBLE!

Just in terms of Vitamin C, even though the RDA is like 60 mgs per day, the actual amount needed by an active, fully grown human is probably in the 5000-10000 mgs per day range!
Really! Truly!
Goats make their own vitamin C, and researchers have measured the amount they make when they are stressed, by like electrically shocking them a few times an hour.

They make the equivalent of 100000 mgs per day! ONE HUNDRED GRAMS!!

So if you try to not supplement your Vitamin C and get it all from your diet, your talking probably eating citrus fruits from sunup till sundown. Literally.
And that doesnt help hardly at all for all the other nutrients, especially the essential amino acids.

Lol!

It wasn’t you, I was just kind of ranting!

My diet is pretty regular, but that doesn’t mean unchanging.
During the spring/summer, I am eating alot of fresh veggies. Pretty much daily. Peppers, cukes, radishes, some lettuce but not so much, SPINACH!! (a biggie), watermelon, apples, peaches and plums, strawberries, oh yeah tomatoes, stuff like that.

When fall/winter show up I traditionally shift to eating more of the pasta side. Home made spaghetti, Mac and Cheese, lasagna, heck noodles and beef gravy.

But all times of the year I make sure I eat some high quality protein. Eggs, steak, tuna fish, shrimp, chicken breast or charbeque, whatever.

And I take a good multi mineral supp, plus additional C, plus additional zinc and mag.

And it seems to work for me. I’m 56, 5’7”, come in about 130 lbs, no major or chronic diseases. Like most I could use way more cardio but I’m usually involved in so many dam projects I can’t get super motivated.
(projects like doing alot of auto rebuilding, that sort of thing)

My best suggestion is to find what works for you. You WILL KNOW when you are getting close because you will not be as tired so much. You will SLEEP MUCH BETTER, which is a biggie. You will not have as many aches and pains and you will notice a strong sense of thirst (when you are thirsty).

Good luck!

Yeah. There’s always studies that contradict other studies. We aren’t “cookie cutter” people so one size does not fit all. For some it may be too much calcium. For others, we need it.

You people need to read this so that you will know how these so called studies are done. Most if not all of this type of study are crap and the authors have other motives. Be it an ego boost, desire for research money or other things.
So read this and learn so that you will never again fall into the trap.
