Watch for similar reports from other American Embassies/Facilities - that will be the indicator of whether this is something serious, or just a one-off..

Here's a tiny bit more info:
(Reuters) - Three employees of the U.S. embassy in Paris were being treated for poisoning on Friday after opening mail, but there was no immediate information on the seriousness of their condition, police said. A spokesman for France's judicial police said a mobile laboratory had been deployed at the embassy to test for poisonous substances. He said that, as the incident occurred at a U.S. government building, only U.S. officials were qualified to comment. A U.S. embassy official said the building had not been evacuated but declined any further comment. (Reporting by Gerard Bon and Nicolas Bertin; Editing by David Stamp)

Due to Paris being 6 hours ahead, if it were a coordinated campaign, we should start seeing similar things on the Eastern Seaboard of the US at about 10:00 AM.

I wonder if it’s just the old “white powder” stunt. The employees have to be decontaminated just in case, but the substance is harmless and just disrupts things. If they’re not closing the building, it doesn’t sound as serious as the headline makes it sound. Then again, reports are early.

” I wonder if it’s just the old “white powder” stunt. “

Either this is a very effective news blackout, or this is another case of employees getting ‘sick’ from an envelope full of cornstarch....

I just heard on the radio news that it is two employees, not three, who were poisoned. It’s either early times on this incident, or, possibly a mixup? Or . . . ?

When I say, “I am a New Yorker”, I am not saying that I am a large, underpowered Chrysler luxury car.

It was a ‘scare’. Nothing harmful in letters.

Idiomatically, when one says he is from Berlin, he says, “Ich bin Berliner.” To say that you are an American you would say “Ich bin Amerikaner.” Berliner or Amerikaner can be either a noun or an adjective, you figure it out from context. I like to make an analogy to the expressions “I’m Danish” and “I’m a Danish” spoken in English, but the case isn’t quite as strong. “Ich bin ein Berliner.” is grammatically ambiguous, but idomatically it sounds like he said, “I’m a Danish.”

I’m sorry, my German I teacher, a lady from Salzburg, said that Kennedy said, “I’m a donut.” She didn’t need a lot of ‘splaining. If you want to say you are a resident of Berlin, you say, “Ich bin Berliner.”, regardless of your accent.

Ah. JFK may NOT have said, “I am a Jelly Donut” in German, But Jimmuh Carter once said “I have Always Lusted after the Polish people” in Polish. LOL. I remember it! It was particularly funny in light of his Playboy interview where he admitted to “Lust in his heart”

Apparently you don't remember it accurately, since Jimmy Carter was not speaking Polish on that occasion. It was the translator who screwed up.
