Who’s your favorite Boy Scout? If you were one, what was the best thing you did in Scouts?

One of my most memorable experiences was going on a 20 mile hike to qualify for the hiking merit badge. I finished last with badly blistered feet accompanied by the Chaplain. Even my Dad left me behind.

All four of my boys were in scouting. Son #2 went to Jambo in 1997, son #3 went in 2001, and son #4 is there right now.

I have nothing but good to say for the scouting program and what it did to help my boys become the fine young men they are today!!

Well - that is asking whether I like myself better than my son ;-) He is at the National Jamboree right now, and will be a DJ on QBSA at 10:30AM PDT. ;-) I bet I can answer what HIS most exciting experience was in scouting ;-)

For myself - it was summer camp at the bottom of the Grand Canyon at Hava Supai. This was 40 years ago. I remember the trip to the rim - strongest Hale storm I’ve ever seen. The walk in - 10 miles, and getting water out of a flowing stream (you wouldn’t do that today without purifying it..) Swimming in the 200 foot across pool formed by a 75 foot water fall right next to the camp. Working our way behind the Water fall on a small ledge that was there. Jumping off the 10 foot tall rock just to the left of the water fall, then surfacing 75 feet away because of the current. Mr. Wright making a chocolate cake in such primitive conditions. Sleeping under the stars with just a ground cloth and a light blanket.

Yep - that about summarizes it ;-)

Both of my son’s are my favorite boy scouts. One just crossed over and has earned Tenderfoot already. THe otehr is a Life Scout, ASPL and good leader. He, I and a few otehrs just completed a 6 day 50 mile backpack trek in the mountains. We just moved so we’re between troops right now.
