Investigators Recommend Rangel Get Slap On Wrist

The investigative panel looking at alleged violations against House rules by New York Rep. Charlie Rangel recommended a "reprimand" for the longtime lawmaker, Rep. Gene Green, D-Texas, a member of the panel said Friday.

A reprimand is the most lenient of the three, formal modes of discipline in the House. The other two are censure and expulsion. A Congressional Research Service report indicates that "reprimand expressly involves a lesser level of disapproval of a Member than that of Censure, and is thus a less severe reubuke by the institution.

"Under a reprimand, a lawmaker must stand in the well of the House and be reprimanded by the Speaker.

Rangel is facing 13 allegations of violations relating to his tax filings for properties he owns in the Dominican Republic and the use of four rent-controlled apartments in pricey New York City.

If there is no settlement, the case goes to another ethics committee panel that will likely hold a public "trial" in September against the 20-term lawmaker.

If Rangel were to be reprimanded, he would have to stand in the well of the House and listen to his punishment being meted out by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The full House would likely have to vote to reprimand Rangel.

So now we know that one “YOU LIE” equals 13 felony counts. Both receive the same penalty. What a travesty.

I figured that it would take at least 2 “YOU LIE”’s and maybe 3 or four “WHERE”S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?” to equal 13 felony counts but I was sadly mistaken.

I guess I’m not surprised. Corruption in the House is an issue ONLY if a GOP member is involved.

But at the same time, I thought the Dems would throw Rangel under the bus (as a sacrifice of sorts) to appease voters who want their politicans to be corruption-free.

I hope there’s a way for the national GOP to take an issue like this and run with it. The milion dollar question is: Will They?

what a Republican controlled House would do later?

Are you making a joke? Four republicans couldn’t agree to do anything to this crook. A congress controlled by republicans just means more have to cave. And there’d be plenty of volunteers.

I hereby admit to all my FRiends that I was wrong.

I posted on earlier thread that I thought he would receive a censure, be denied to speak on the Floor for some determined amount of time, considering the scope of the activity involved. I never considered the Dems would just let him off with a lecture from Mama Nancy, I honestly didn't think they'd let the opportunity to score an easy few points with the American people go by.

A “reprimand” for conduct which would be felony tax evasion for ordinary citizens? Yeah, right. Pelosi claiming to oppose corruption is like a prostitute arguing for virginity.

Haw haw. I knew it, I knew it.

Throw out the whole stinking mess. Vote no incumbents.

Well Kennedy murdered a woman and got away with it, I guess Old Charlie can cheat on his taxes.

I expect these gangsters to go easy on each other.

What’s puzzling is how they keep getting re-elected!!!

The fact that this debacle has come this far means that Rangel has done a hell of a lot.

A reprimand will be immediately followed by Rangel calling a press conference to say that this ruling exonerates him of charges that he had serious ethics violations, and then he will demand his chairmanship back.

Reprimand? What a joke. That just makes them look worse to the American people than they already do. A leftist Demonrat would have to be an axe murderer to get expelled from this Congress.

I think this committee is floating a trial balloon. If the public reaction is outrage, the ethics committee may refuse to take its advice.
