Democratic Rep. Mike McMahon Fires Staffer for "Jewish Money" List
CBS ^ | 7/30/2010 | Stephanie Condon

A Democratic representative from New York has fired his campaign spokesperson after she gave a newspaper a list of what she called "Jewish money" going to his Republican opponent.

In an effort to show that Republican challenger Mike Grimm has received most of his financial support from donors outside of New York's 13th district, Democratic Rep. Mike McMahon's re-election campaign gave the New York Observer a list of more than 80 Jewish donors to Grimm.

The list was entitled "Grimm Jewish Money Q2."

At least half a dozen of the donors on the list live on Staten Island, which is part of the 13th district.

"Where is Grimm's money coming from," Jennifer Nelson, McMahon's campaign spokesperson, asked the Observer. "There is a lot of Jewish money, a lot of money from people in Florida and Manhattan, retirees."

Nelson told the Observer she did not know how the campaign's finance team compiled the list, but she said that finance director Debra Solomon is Jewish and "knows a lot of people in that community."

Politico reports that McMahon has fired Nelson and apologized for her comments.

"These comments were entirely inappropriate and there is no place for this kind of behavior. I was outraged by these unfortunate remarks which were unauthorized and are in no way indicative of my beliefs or of my campaign," McMahon said. "I am proud to represent an incredibly diverse community and to enjoy an incredibly diverse base of support. Any comments that could serve to divide our community along religious or ethnic lines have no place in our community or my campaign. I sincerely apologize for her comments, and as she has since been terminated from our campaign, there will be no such incidents in the future."

Grimm said the list was an outrage.

"The fact that a U.S. Congressman would separate out any group by religion or even by ethnicity is nothing short of outrageous," he told the Observer. "This goes beyond politics."

The 13th district went to John McCain in the 2008 presidential election, and both McCain and his 2008 running mate Sarah Palin have endorsed Grimm, the blog RedState points out.

Grimm is the considered a "Tea Party" Candidate.

Tells you a lot about the Tea Party movement

Grimm has the support of both Palin and Giuliani.... and his Democrat opponent is concerned that he gets too much Jewish financial support.

Tells you that Tea Party supporters can not be pigeon holed.

Great news that Jews are donating to conservative causes.

It sucks to get caught. And somebody has to go under the bus. I’m sure Nelson will get a cushy job somewhere in the democratic kingdom.

Hold it, I have it on good authority that the Tea Party is a bunch of anti-semetic basterds.

In fact, when I was at a Tea Party rally.. .

Oh, nevermind.

I trust this event will show the Jewish voter the true nature of the democraatic party and the direction it is going. Obama and his goons are throwing Jews and Israel under the bus.

This election matters. It is a challenge to the process of being dumbed down by the progressive left wing dictators.

I suppose McMahon doesn’t want any of that “Jewish” money. Jim Webb played the “Jew” card here in Virginia.

He fired the campaign spokesperson. No way was she the “brains” behind this list. She just communicates what is handed to her by people up the food chain.

"Just another Dum anti-semite."

Outside of Pat Buchannen, it's virtually impossible to name a well-known and outspoken antisemite in the conservative movement, or the Republican party (yes, I'm excluding Ron Paul, because he's neither Republican nor conservative).

But, if you look at leftists and Democrats, the list of openly hostile and antisemitic "activists" is plentiful, and yet Jewish people still overwhelmingly support the Democrats.

How did the staffer know Grimm’s contributors were Jewish? Was she assuming that just because they lived in Manhattan or Florida, they were Jewish? Was she stereotyping their names?

This is all because of Palin's endorsement of Grimm.

One of Grimm's primary opponents also panicked too.

Nelson told The Observer she did not know the campaign's finance team compiled the list, but she said that finance director Debra Solomon is Jewish and "knows a lot of people in that community."

A convenient "pass the blame" if I ever saw one. Fact is, except for some well-known local Jewish Democrat politicians circling the wagons, McMahon himself is considered to have approved this Grimm Jewish contributor list.

BTW, it's a bit unusual that a leftist organ like The Observer would cover this story so objectively as they did. Kudos to the writer.
