Texas A&M says Big 12 must fulfill pledge (bolting if conference doesn't pay them $20mil annually)

The Big 12 Conference promised Texas A&M $20 million annually and the Aggies intend to collect, A&M president R. Bowen Loftin said Wednesday.

And what happens if the Big 12 doesn’t honor its $20 million pledge? A high-ranking A&M official said late Wednesday that every legal avenue would be explored first, with the potential of bolting for the Southeastern Conference coming after.

Part of the arrangement in the Big 12 surviving, as ABC/ESPN and Fox Sports stepped up financially (verbally to this point), hinged on league heavyweights Texas, Oklahoma and A&M each receiving $20 million annually in coming years, thanks to upgraded TV deals for the conference.

Nebraska and Colorado announced in June they are leaving the Big 12 for the Big Ten and Pacific 10, respectively, with the Cornhuskers set to leave next year (and Colorado to be determined).

The two schools will have reported exit fees of between $30 million and $40 million combined, and in keeping the league intact, five of the schools that would have been left behind had the conference dissolved — Baylor, Missouri, Iowa State, Kansas and Kansas State — had agreed to give up their parts of the departing schools’ fees to the “big three” to make sure they reached the $20 million.

The A&M official said Wednesday it wasn’t the school’s “concern” how the Big 12 got its money together for the revenue distribution — just that it lived up to its promise of $20 million annually, starting in 2012-13. The league’s pledge is oral, and the A&M official said the school’s lawyers are working to get the commitment in writing.

Bolt. You're just living off high cable TV rates. The folks paying those high rates that don't give a damn about watching sports won't object to lower rates when programming they don't watch goes away. What a bunch of arrogant twits.

Mizzou needs to bolt the Big 12 and go to the Big 10

I Agree.
The A&M official that said it is of no concern how the conference gets the money. EXACTLY

It does not matter how Beebee gets the money. All that matters is that he lives up to his commitment.
I hope the Ags go to the SEC. Then my wife (FL gator) and I can argue over a head-to-head game.

To pay for all this...each quarter of football will be shortened by 2 min and replaced by new, enhanced TV ads.

Aggies Pictures, Images and Photos

Big 12 is counting on the Aggies not being able to count to $20 million. It's a good bet.

How bland. We’re very disappointed. :)

Looking forward to another season of college football, FR, and SEC/Pac 10/Big XII/Little 10 flame wars!

A&M is a minor player in the Big 12 and only makes money from the conference due to the economic success of UT and OU.

The Aggies need to accept where they belong in the Big 12 and that is with Baylor, Iowa State and Kansas.

I caught the tail end of the news report on the way out this morning. All I heard was something about the Big 12 paying $20 mil or else. Thanks for the ping

These Big 12 schools need to just shut up and get on with college athletics. And despite the Stallings connection, A&M is no big prize and I for one hope they don’t have any standing invitation to join the SEC. The SEC has twelve teams and that’s a good size for an athletic conference.

It may be true that they belong there, but they don't have to accept it, if the SEC is going to snatch them up and deliver the big bucks.

The wheels are turning and it's looking like the era of the 16 team superconferences is coming. The Big 12 maybe gone soon.

“A&M is a minor player in the Big 12 and only makes money from the conference due to the economic success of UT and OU.”

Humm...A&M has a following that is insane. Teams play them just so they can get the crowds the Aggies draw...win or lose. Their whole philosophy is centered around money. I know....I live here.

The Big 10 doesn’t want Mizzou. The Big 10 never wanted them. They flirted with Mizzou to destabilize the Big 12, then asked Nebraska to join.

If A&M is so "minor" then how come the tu's and zero U's of the world decided to continue "blessing" the Big XII / X with its presence?

Maybe they didn't want TAMU bolting for the SEC (a much more impressive conference with fewer travel issues than the Pac 10)... opening the door for the SEC to recruit Texas' high school talent?

Me thinks the Mac Browns and Bob Stoops of the world would not have such an easy time picking and choosing TX talent vs the Floridas and Alabamas and TAMUs of the SEC.

TAMU, Class of '88; Law Hall (may it R.I.P.) Ramp 9 Mule; f.u.p.!

Best way to pay the goons is to stage an Aggie Lottery.

First prize, $20 million.

One dollar a year for 20 million years.

Guess extortion sounds like a plan when you’re stuck paying three head football coaches.
