GLENDALE, Ariz. Sen. John McCain hasn't always talked tough on immigration. That haunted his presidential ambitions, and now his political survival hinges on whether he can show that his conversion is genuine.
It hasn't been easy. Boycotts, vigils and a legal fight over the state's attempted crackdown on illegal immigrants have kept voters attuned to each nuance in his run for re-election.
"Since 2007, I've said we have to secure the border first. I said it in 2008 and 2009 and 2010," McCain told 120 people at a town hall meeting in suburban Phoenix.
Leaning against the back wall at the recreation center, Roseanne Damato, 69, was fuming. Each time he mentioned immigration, she heckled under her breath or shook her head.
"We all know what a hero he was," she said quietly, adding that she wishes he'd won the White House two years ago. But now? "If he's for amnesty, I'm not going to vote for him."
He had already insisted that he rejects any sort of amnesty.
"He says he's not. But he's said that before," she said.

do not have to be scared [of] as president of the United States."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 10 OCT. 2008
"In the long term, if you alienate the Hispanics,
youll pay a heavy price. By the way,
I think the fence is least effective.
But Ill build the G****mned fence if they want it!"
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, FEB. 2007

"We need to sit down as Americans
and recognize these are Gods children as well.
And they need some protection under the law;
they need some of our love and compassion."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 28 NOV. 2007

"There are jobs that Americans will not do,
so we have to make it possible for someone to come
to this country to do a job that an American wont do
and then go back to the country from where they came."
U.S. SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, 16 OCT. 2004
What a coincidence.
Both Juan and his lapdog Lindsay are taking “hard” lines on illegals today.
FUJM! FULG! FUBO!
Hey McCain, you’ve been representing Arizona in the House and then the Senate since 1983.
Why did you let it get so bad?
Does Juan have a full time staffer follow him around with a fire extinguisher to put out the fires always starting in his pants?
I pinched my nose when I voted for him...LITERALLY (in the booth, pinched my nose, pushed the button).
Go away, Mrs. Feingold.
.
Please help Texas watch her borders.
14 live cameras. Watch live and report to border patrol.
Night cams in operation.
.
Should Juan’s pants catch on fire,he has a built in fire suppression system.
I suspect they're both taking it hard. LOL!
Disgusting pieces of sh!t.
Uber RINO Lindsey Ping
"Republican by day, Democrat by night."
Want on or off this ping list?
Just FReepmail me.
Boy. Juan thinks Arizonans are really stupid.
We’ll find out if he’s right in November.
Boy. Juan thinks Arizonans are really stupid.

Can you add that one where he says they could offer Americans $50 an hour and they still wouldn’t pick lettuce (or something like that)?
If this character is in anyway a typical Arizona Republican voter, then we know how McCain is able to lie and hoodwink his way to a lead in the race. This is beyond pathetic.
Why did you let it get so bad?
That'd make a lethal campaign ad for J.D. - it puts the blame where it belongs.
As always, I’m never amazed at what comes out of the Maverick’s mouth.
Meanwhile Mitt has flip to amnesty. Stinking RINOs.
McCain has to be worried that people will not believe the bogus polls. Go JD.
I’m surprised McAmnesty hasn’t accused Sheriff Joe Arpaio for not being aggressive enough to enforce federal immigration laws.
Why did you let it get so bad?"
It just goes to show how out of touch he is with the people of Arizona. He's been there all these years & what legislation about border protection & the illegal invasion has his name on it????
All this tough talk he's doing is making me wonder why he's acting like he just got elected & was not able to do anything about the illegal invasion taking place all these years. Worse yet - he's been encouraging it!!
He is either definitely FOR amnesty or just plain incompetent & should be thrown out of office.
Sherriff Joe just endorsed JD, McCain is probably reliable against amnesty until August 24th. Then win or lose he’ll be for it again.
McCain, Romney, Huckabee
All for AMNESTY
All planning to run again
(Well yes you are right...Romney never stopped running)
If the GOP has no candidate with any guts, we are doomed...
In five minutes he will hold a conference announcing its all a misunderstaning and that illegals are just undocumented victims.
I think so, too. It could cover a lot of issues and it suits JD's style.
This is where McCains been for decades:
1988: Honored by La Raza for opposing official English
McCain attacked Proposition 106, a [AZ] statewide referendum that was being advanced by the so-called English-only movement. McCain told the teachers, Why would we want to pass some kind of initiative that a significant portion of our population considers an assault on their heritage?
Because of his position on the English-only initiative and his willingness to fight for a pluralistic American culture, McCain was one of 10 members of congress who were honored by the National Council of La Raza, a nationwide coalition of Hispanic organizations. In a speech at a ceremony in Washington, before an audience of 500, McCain again attacked English-only initiatives.
The building of our great nation is not the work of immigrants from one or two countries, McCain said, Our nation and the English language have done quite well with Chinese spoken in California, German in Pennsylvania, Italian in New York, Swedish in Minnesota, and Spanish throughout the Southwest. I fail to see the cause for alarm now.

Sheriff Joe has always been for JD

If he loses the primary, he flips to pro amnesty the day after the primary and then sides with the Democrats to push an amnesty bill through during the lame duck session. He will be applauded by the media for being a great statesman. As soon as his term ends in January, he disappears into obscurity.
If he wins the primary and the general election, he flips to pro amnesty the day after the general election. He then sides with Obama and the Democrats to pass amnesty during the lame duck session. He is applauded by the media as a great statesman. By redeeming himself in the eyes of the leftist media establishment he resumes his position as the reliable “moderate” Republican on the mainstream media Sunday talk show circuit where he can be counted on to bash every conservative position and seek the middle ground.
Too late, JM. You and President Bush had a chance to stop all this, but let it pass. You are as guilty as 0.
” Hey McCain, youve been representing Arizona in the House and then the Senate since 1983.
Why did you let it get so bad? “
Hell, he wanted it WORSE !
Everyone pitch in & write some good ads for him!! FReepers are the best when it comes down to getting things done in a very dinstinct way.. It could make a difference. Time is running out & help is needed ASAP!!!
Can anyone name the European leader who wants to revokes citizenship or removal of any illegal threatening police or leaders of that nation?
Due to the copyright laws of AP, you will have to go there and read the goods news.
This election is so crazy....we were supposed to get rid of Boxer, McCain, Reid, and Crist, but it seems like we will be stuck with all of them. I don’t understand Americans sometimes.
