FORT A.P. HILL, Va. — Her crown glinting in the morning sun, Miss America was telling 45,000 Boy Scouts and their leaders the other day how thrilled she was to be here at the National Scout Jamboree, to be among “the most amazing young women ...”

Doug Mills/The New York Times Tom Copeland Sr. helped scouts learn to shoot a rifle. The Boy Scouts are sticking to core values and pushing for more diversity.

Whoops! The scouts, ever courteous and kind, could nonetheless barely stifle a collective groan. Some covered their faces in embarrassment. Miss America — Caressa Cameron, the former Miss Virginia — quickly recovered, apologized and explained that she usually speaks to groups of young women.

Scouts have been hit hard by local school districts denying them access for recruitment, let alone providing information.

In our area, the local school districts have shut us out.

Then, there is the surreptitious hit pieces by the slimes and other so-called journalists.

I read one comment that referred to an article the NY slimes did concerning a “paramilitary wing” of the BSA. I’ve been involved for many years and have never heard even a whisper of such a thing.

If whites are the only ones who see value in Scouting, how is that our fault? The outreach to hispanics, asians, blacks, etc. has been going on for years.

My son is working on his Eagle, and will be the better for it. It’s a shame other parents aren’t willing to make some small sacrifices for their kids to get something positive out of life and to interact with other kids from other backgrounds.

There is another movement to get Scouting back to its real roots.

These Scouts are into the old fashioned movement focused on adventure.

THe link leads to a WIki on the movement - very intersting....

Lots of discussion going on at National and at Regional with Councils on that subject. Since adult women Scout Leaders can be Nominated/Elected to OA and a number of Venture crews are supporting County Search and Rescue, Climbing, Rappelling in various Councils the push is on.
