To Assist in Elections, Obama May Stay Away By JEFF ZELENY

WASHINGTON — As lunch was served in the Roosevelt Room of the White House one day last week, President Obama assured the nine Democratic members of Congress sitting around the table that he would do anything he could to help them survive their fall elections.

Even, he said, if it meant staying away.

“You may not even want me to come to your district,” Mr. Obama said, according to guests, nearly all of whom hold seats that Republicans are aggressively seeking.

Three months before the midterm elections, the president is stepping up his involvement in the fight to preserve the Democratic Party’s control of Congress. But advisers said he would concentrate largely on delivering a message, raising money and motivating voters from afar, rather than on racing from district to district.

It is a vivid shift from the last two elections, when Mr. Obama was the hottest draw for Democratic candidates in red and blue states alike. And it highlights the tough choices Democrats face as they head toward Election Day with the president’s approval ratings depressed, Republicans energized, the economic slump still lingering and two veteran House Democrats now facing public hearings on ethics charges.

Remember when having the POTUS campaign for you was considered a big lure? I think Reagan was the last one. All the others since were not popular 2-4 years later.

Republicans posted gains in both the house and senate in 2002 and W played a large role.

Other presidents in off-year elections at least tried to make their case, as unpopular as it may have been to a portion of the electorate. Obama shows an almost pre-planned, arrogant detachment to the probable fate of his political foot soldiers. That those same people want him to give their own campaigns a wide berth speaks volumes as to how members of his own party view him. This is the most bizarre episode in American history.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

So resign.

While I agree with the basic fact that BO’s presence will hinder Dem’s reelection prospects in Nov, let’s not lose sight of the fact that this story is itself a campaign strategm: “Look at how self-aware and big I am, I recognize my current unpopularity may hinder your chances in Nov, so because the rest of the country hasn’t caught up with my brilliance yet, I will graciously bow out.”

Monday Obama is coming to Atlanta and the Dem Gov candidate, Roy Barnes, will be in south Georgia, about as far from Atlanta as possible.

GWB did pretty well for the GOP in the 2002 and 2004 elections. And I wouldn’t say he was a drag in 2000. 2006 and 2008 he was not wanted but that’s his own fault. Had he pursued different policies he might have continued to be a net plus on the campaign trail. Same holds true for Obama but he’s a Democrat. A Republican has no excuse the domestic agenda GWB pursued his second term.

“You may not even want me to come to your district,” Mr. Obama said”

Riiiiiiiight. But he can’t help himself.

Regarding what you said about no president since RR being a campaign asset 2-4 years into their term, well, BHO LOVES to set “firsts”. It’s just a little over 1-1/2 years into his.

“Life is good (with the exception of the Obama recession).”

With all due respect, my FRiend, that’s such an understatement of the disaster (??) I’m not sure where to begin.

How about - with the exception of Pelosi not having a real challenger to her re-election.

And most of all...how about - with the exception of Obama being in the White House at all.

Confidence - the feeling you have before you really know the situation.

"...it’ll help the NATION succeed..." That is why he won't resign. He isn't in it to "help the Nation succeed". He's in it to destroy this Nation.

All the others since were not popular 2-4 years later.

Your memory is accurate.

Except for 2002.

The party in power almost always loses seats in their first off-year election. But Bush and the GOP gained three seats in the Senate and six seats in the House.
