BALI, Indonesia (AP) -- Putu Valentino Rosiadi should have started third grade this month.
But instead of buying a new school uniform and notebooks, his father mournfully cradles a black-and-white photo.

What sort of culture permits this?
A rabies epidemic has gripped Bali, an island of 3 million people and one of Asia's top tourist destinations. Seventy-eight deaths have officially been logged in the past two years, including that of a 40-year-old woman a week ago...
Ones with disfunctional government run programs.....
The type of culture that thinks it is a god given right to have vicious animals run wild. Just check out the pit bull threads on Free Republic... even many so-called conservatives feel that way.
I have a feeling your comment is meant to reflect on Islam (apologies if I’m incorrect), but the vast majority of Bali is Hindu.
the kind that prevents their ‘subjects’ from having weapons and defending themselves...
....you know? like the Dhimmicrats want for America?
Really obsessed with those pit bulls, eh, Chet? Do they even have pit bulls in Bali? Maybe you should get some professional help for your phobia.
Bali dogs, often covered in a scaly mange, are a common sight across the island. They roam beaches and hang out in packs, lounging around temples and markets. Many are kept as guard dogs, but as part of the island's Hindu tradition, most are typically allowed to run and breed freely.
I'd say that local culture has got to recognize the germ theory of disease and understand that these dogs are carrying a deadly disease. Bali has apparently tried to wipe out the huge feral dog population but hasn't gotten much citizen support and, in addition, there is a vaccine shortage.
but Indonesia is mostly muzzy.....
Why does it always seem that, in the most beautiful places on Earth, the biggest idiots reside to ruin it. It’s everywhere.
No one has any guns to use on these dogs? How about some heavy pipes, boards, or tree branches? Knock them unconscious and beat them to death. Sounds brutal, but if it saves lives, so be it.
Chet, you are so full of sh!t your eyes are brown. Show me one (1)...one post by any FReeperr that has ever, at any time, EVER, indicated that the supported, advocated or even insinuated it was a God given right to "have vicious animals run wild."
Show me one or retract this comment.
a culture that is superstitious about dogs?
But not in a nurturing way...
In another place they are kept as pets and in another allowed to roam and breed freely, and carry disease.
No consistency at all!
okay, I retract that any Freeper has ever advocated having “vicious” animals run wild, since they truly believe that pits are not vicious and are cuddly wuddly love muffins that would do no harm unless provoked by bad humans.
A huge difference. Thank you for your post.
Talk about leaping to a conclusion.

“...or does she put her effort into a massive rabies vaccination campaign to save dogs from being killed by strychnine under the governments elimination approach to rabies control?
Life was bad enough for animals in Bali before rabies arrived for the first time last November. For starters, the tropical climate leads to nasty skin problems and parasites. Dogs are killed and maimed every day by crushing traffic. Poverty prevents people from getting the medical care and food they need for themselves, let alone for dogs, and some restaurants still serve dog meat. Then there are religious factors: The Muslim minority considers dogs to be haram, or dirty, while the Hinduism practiced by the majority encompasses animism and animal sacrifice. And while nearly every home and business is casually linked to a dog or two who may bark at an intruder and receive a scrap of food in return, few Balinese realize they should put water out for these dogs or treat their wounds.
Add to this backdrop the arrival of rabies. Nine people have now died from the disease in the capital area of Badung/Denpasar. The governments initial reaction was to ignore international recommendations for a comprehensive vaccination campaign, electing instead to kill thousands in a mass culling.
‘Its very simple: You have to do mass vaccinations, because dogs are here to stay in Bali, says Dr. Elly Hiby, head of Companion Animals for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). It [a mass campaign] is not ridiculously difficult and its not even that expensive, but if you havent done it before, then the idea of implementing it can be overwhelming.’”
Chet is right. It is also the same Culture that says “Islam is a religion of peace” and says “Abortion is just a religious issue” and that “A police state is good for us”.
And YES many FRiends say this. GW Bush and John McCain say this. And if those folks have their way, Rabid dogs of the canine variety will run loose in our streets in the not to distant future.
We are 2 seconds to midnight from this being the case here and now. And to pretend that the right wing is even close to doing anything about it is silly.
Once we take the majority this fall, by default, not because we stand for anything, but once we do take it, and then CONTINUE the same policies, it’s all over. It’s done.
And I am not saying this as a what if... I am saying this as a WATCH AND SEE IT UNFOLD!
This IS what is going to happen. 6 years from now: THIS is the future....
Abortion STILL frequent and legal.
Gay Marriage, LAW of the land and open and in you face.
Amnesty for 50 million Mexicans. DONE and PASSED.
Unemployment 10%+ as the usual, 15% in some places.
War in Iraq, Afghanistan, and US troops stationed in 40 other countries. 250,000+ no end in sight.
But, Islam is still a religion of peace and we still send BILLIONS to them.
Democrats control BOTH houses and finally have 5 or 6 seats on the court.
THAT is the future. Why? Because “conservatives” do not exist in any numbers and the ones who call themselves such, actually SUPPORT one or more of the problems listed above.
So Chet is right. For a whole LIST of terrifying reasons.
"In the traditional Balinese faith people believe that dogs will take them to heaven."
I’d call it more “Daniel” “Ezekiel” and “Revelation” personally. But it IS the future. The only thing I am not 100% sure of... is how bad it gets BEFORE the rapture.... It could get really really bad.... plan accordingly.
It [a mass campaign] is not ridiculously difficult and its not even that expensive, but if you havent done it before, then the idea of implementing it can be overwhelming.
Campaign to vacinate rabid democrats gets boost.
Better than mass culling of population say experts.
Clearly Chet is a compulsive idiot with a severe phobia.
You are simply nuts.
It is - but Bali is the exception.
scratch that Bali vacation I was planning! :>////>
Really? So when Paul was speaking of catamites, homosexuals and adulterers, (1 Co 6:9) he was thinking only of the united States in the 21st century? When he penned what is Romans 1, was he gazing into a crystal ball or was he describing the past, current and future human condition? In Genesis 6, the antediluvians were described by God as "every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." When we read in ch 13 and 18 "the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful" have we achieved that status yet?
RachelFaith, there is no Dispensational idea of "rapture", just our LORD's Parousia and judgement. In the meantime, we are seeing the world heading towards its natural state. You have been disllusioned and spoiled by having the grace of living in a unique time of world history when the Christian faith was given its season to bring to the world prosperity which characterized the economic times prior to the Flood and the destruction of Sodom.
Your anticipation of bad things is not unwarranted only in the sense that our present goodness is not normal, and an antediluvian/Sodom environment is the atmosphere at the time of Judgement. (Lk 17:26-30). So let me recommend that instead of filling your head with FUD from the dispensational crowd, that you acknowledge what our LORD taught, for He charaterized the last days as like Sodom where "the ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built". The language suggests strongly that relative prosperty will mark the economy of the times - where "they planted, they built" is indicative of a people who didn't just stop planning and working for the future because of the fears of the present.
Now I will admit that v27 "they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark" doesn't preclude the option of Sodomite "marriages", I just don't see everything as grim as you are hoping.
In that framework, I now have to question what on earth you intend when you say "plan accordingly". According to your own teachers, allegedly you will be just minding your own business and "poof" you are gone. They even like to emphasize this by fantasizing about planes crashing because all of the qualified aircraft personnel (and the automated pilot systems) will be raptured out of the cockpit. How do you plan on a "thief in the night" sort of snatching away? And if you were to assemble a checklist of things to do to "plan accordingly" what would be some of the items on that to-do list?
Again, I don't think that it is "Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelation", rather Genesis and the Gospels.
Nope. Thinking civilization in its broadest sense would make sure this didn’t happen. Flat out they themselves and their government as well are letting them down.
and in yet others they are viewed as unclean and treated with contempt and brutality because they are the reincarnated souls of criminals from a previous life...
mad dogs ping
“Culturally, it is difficult to convince people that dogs can carry disease,” Sutedja said. “In the traditional Balinese faith people believe that dogs will take them to heaven.”
