A deal to sell Newsweek to a 91-year-old stereo equipment magnate could be announced as early as today, a move that would signal the end of a half-century of ownership by The Washington Post Company.

“Dr. Harman is chairman of the Program Committee of the Board of the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies and a member of the Board of the Carter Center of Emory University. Dr. Harman served as the Deputy Secretary of Commerce of the United States in 1977 and 1978.”

I’d pay 10$ just for the ability to fire all the staff....

And the opportunity to give them bad recommendations when their potential next employers call!

Soon to be an ex-millionaire...

Q. How do you make a small fortune in the liberal print media?

A. Start with a large fortune.

This is simply the socialist response to talk radio - they can't get an audience, but need a soapbox.

......He is married to Jane Harman......

One wonders what a 91 year old could do to satisfy a 65 year old trophy wife...... buy her a moonbat rag

the company and its chairman, Donald E. Graham, have turned away several potential buyers whom they believed would lead the magazine in a markedly different editorial direction.

But Newsweek, The Washington Post, and the New York Times would scream bloody murder if a white couple selling their home refused offers from black people "whom they believed would lead the neighborhood in a markedly different direction". Oh, the hypocrisy!

“His goal is to keep Fareed Zakaria and his anti-American, pro-terrorist rantings in print for as long as possible. If Newsweek shut down, Fareed would have to get a job at Al Jazeera.”

Agree. This move takes liabilities off WAPO balance sheet, and most importantly, income statement and moves it to 2 hardcore pro-Israeli supporting Dems. WAPO may be a lot of things, but anti-Jew it ain’t. Harman and wife are both Jewish, with the wife Jane, the daughter of Jewish immigrants. She has been caught running interference for Israel during the AIPAC scandal. She is big on terrorism and did in fact support Bush on the WOT. On social issues she is a disaster, but given she represents LA, she is probably the best you are going to do there. She and hubby live in Venice, CA. Venice is one weird little beach town.

Three of my favorite Newsweak cover stories (paraphrased):
1. Nurture versus Nature: Scientists Recognize Differences between Males and Females.
2. Population Growth to Cause World Wide Starvation;
3. The Next Ice Age.

Sure there are many more, but the above were just laughable, even back in the '70's when I was young and clueless, especially that scientists had discovered there are inherent differences between the sexes. My wife and I looked at each other in amazement while raising our young son and daughter.

Personally, I hope Newsweak is passed around from liberal to liberal, costing each of them a hundred million dollars before moving on to the next sucker. That represents money burning a hole in their pockets anyway, that otherwise could have been spent making more trouble for the public, and undermining the country.

Shame on The Washington Post Company for stealing a dollar from a 91 year old.

That's pretty much my take on the whole thing. It's not like anyone's going to read it now just because it's owned by a different liberal, so why not drain off all their money in fruitless pursuits?

WaPo will be assuming Newsweak’s pension and retiree liabilities.

Harmon is agreeing to fund post-takeover operating losses and to keep liberals like Fareed Zakaria, Jonathan Alter and Eleanor Clift on staff.

As far as I know, it’s printed exclusively for physicians and dentists’ offices.

.....and this will change the incredible bias, how, exactly?

By making it government-sanctioned/supported. Newsweek will become an "unofficial" Obama propaganda medium. No longer will the magazine's bias be free market bias. Remember, We Are All Socialists Now.

Exactly. And they probably have to give it to THEM for free.

the company and its chairman, Donald E. Graham, have turned away several potential buyers whom they believed would lead the magazine in a markedly different editorial direction or make deep staff cuts.

Doesn't Graham have a fiduciary responsibility to sell the company's assets to whoever made the best total offer? Can the shareholders of the company sue Graham and the rest of the board for not acting in their best interest?

(One possibility is that the other offers were for more cash but stuck the WaPo with more of the debt, while the current offer is for $1 plus taking over Newsweak's debt.

I won’t subject my patients to Communist propaganda.

Upon arrival, the Red rag is ritually burned, shot and run over with my non-inclusive, exploitative, rain-forest destroying, gaz guzzling, children starving, motorcycle rider killing(got that one here on FR), only-for-ignorant-rubes big assed, high horsepower SUV.

The selection of reading material in those places is really annoying. About 80% is female-only, and the rest is either sports or commie “news”. So if you’re a guy, they think you’re only allowed to be interested in sports or leftist propaganda. Last time I was at the dentist, there were probably 50 mags, only one of which was worth reading, and some guy had it. He still had it by the time I left. Went back a couple days later and THAT was the mag they decided to cull when cleaning up!! Come to think of it, that was probably the only magazine the cleaning crew thought was worth stealing.
