It's not a religious thing, though there may be a political or quasi-political anti-consumerism motivation.
Mostly, they just get so used to telling the kids "No" that they can't stop.
If you take pride in being a "non-conformist" you may not have the same points of reference and institutional or traditional boundaries that other people have.
The question would be whether this is Barack's thing or his mother's or his grandparents' or Michelle's.
A cultural legacy can't be excluded -- maybe having lived in Indonesia Barack or his mother picked up the Muslim tradition of ignoring birthdays -- but there doesn't have to be a commitment to a particular religion or theology behind the practice of not giving birthday presents.
You also can't exclude a narcissistic motivation behind this. There are people who convince themselves that they have a high motivation in not giving presents when it might be truer to say that they just don't want to be bothered.

yes, it does sound Hawaiian which makes sense if he was raised there for a few years....I wasn’t thinking (which is rare....) but I read somewhere about the origin of his daughter’s names before he was the president...and I thought it had something to do with Russia and communism. Well actually, that would depend on what ELSE you do.
I DO find the name that they picked for their oldest daughter to be suspect, understanding that NONE of my black family or friends would have considered a Russian name. Is there a family member with the name? A good friend? Then there is a reason. If not, it’s REALLY unusual and knowing mom and dad are Marxists, I look at the name as a clue to their interests.
Our actions mean something. Clues just reinforce them.
