Katie Couric mocks Sarah Palin’s children

Katie Couric, whose real name is Katherine Anne Couric, mocked the names of Sarah Palin’s children during a rehearsal in her studio. Her comments, made during the 2008 presidential campaign, are being discussed in the blogosphere today after being leaked.

“Where the hell do they get these names from?” she asked, referring to Palin children Trig and Track, sending her crew into peals of laughter.

I have some new names for CBS. In a tragedy in Louisiana this Monday, six young teenagers drowned.

Their names were: Takeitha, JaMarcus, JaTavious, Litrelle, LaDairus and Latevin.

These, like the names of Palin’s children, are American names.

Times have changed since Jews newly arrived from Europe named their boys either Marty or Bernie and black people in the South named their kids either Bessy or Washington. You don’t really want to go into things like where the hell a name like Katherine got a K on the front of it instead of a C, as it was spelled in the tradition. The neurosis could drag all the way back to Prague, say, in the 1600s.

The singular feature of America that persists west of 57th Street, where “Katie” and CBS live in paralysis, acting out an early-’60s fantasy equal to that of “Mad Men,” is that we Americans are born free and find and take that freedom in every generation.

In terms anthropologists like Mircea Eliade and Sir James George Fraser would use, you could say we chop down the father’s tree in every generation; an archetypal reenactment of George Washington chopping down the cherry tree to free us from our pasts — European, personal and otherwise — and their anchors to the prisons of orthodoxy and tradition.

In this regard we plant our own tree and we take our own names. It is sacred and symbolic. And in this sacred act we name our kids any damn thing we please.

Well, Sarah has explained many times where she got the names. They are not names I would choose, but I haven’t lived her life, either.

1)Track was named because Sarah and Todd met when he was running track in HS, and she is a runner too.

2) Bristol was named for their fishing lease on Bristol Bay.

3) Willow was named — I forget.

4) Piper was named for their plane.

5) Trig is a Norwegian word meaning strong.

Is this any stranger than the millions of American mothers who have named their kids Madison, or Dakota? How about Buffy and Trey? I’ll bet Katie Couric has friends with kids named Buffy and Trey.

Personally, I prefer traditional names, but we each have our own say in choosing names for our children. Katie can go pound salt. What did she name her kids, anyhow?

I stopped after that lie of a title. If you can’t get the title correct it totally ruins the story. Of course Palin probably wanted to think that Katie was making for of her children and not their names...how mature of her....gag!

What would happen if someone like Rush Limbaugh or Britt Hume made fun of Barry’s two girls ? Double standards would kick in and people would demand the heads of those who mock Barry’s children !

Can’t say I like Couric, and I do like Palin, but it is a class-issue—and I would of laughed too at Couric’s questions, as I agree... Made-up names are strange, and tend to exist primarily in certain ethnic groups, and/or educational/income levels.

What makes Palin interesting, is she is not of an educational/income level which, in her part of the country at least, has traditionally been very Republican...that’s what makes her so startling and refreshing. She’s a social conservative, who’s moved into being a fiscal conservative as well, or in a way, a Reagan democrat who’s grown up.

That doesn’t make me admire her taste in weird names however. Tis just a minor issue, so who cares?

Here's a quote I found somewhere... it describes Sarah Palin perfectly:

As you know, I found this in your freeper profile. So it matters little that you mock or criticize her children's names. in fact, according to your profile's quote, you (as a critic) don't count at all.

All that counts are her great darinig in doing what needs to be done, and her amazing record of fantastic accomplishments, especially where many before her had failed miserably. Dipwad.

Naming kids can be tricky. You want a name that’s distinctive, but not weird; stylish, but not trendy; and a name that’s cute enough when they’re young, but will be taken seriously when they’re grown.

You can’t name a girl “Candy” or something and expect her to be referred to as “Judge Candy” later in life, rather than “please take out your dollar bills and welcome Candy to the stage.”

We named our kids Caleb and Reagan.

I don’t care for the names of the Palins’ kids I personally think they cross the line from distictive to weird ... but its really none of my business. Couric is an idiot ... but, it was only an offhand remark, and not altogether unfounded. There are much greater problems with Couric’s “reporting” than her characterization of the Palin kids’ names.

It is extremely disgusting and revealing about Couric that she has a smartass comment to make about the names of Palin’s children *right after* she is talking about Palin not having an abortion when she knew her baby was going to be born with Down Syndrome.

Notice nothing comes to her mind about THAT, for a comment.
