Atomic Apology? U.S. to Send First Delegation to Hiroshima A-Bomb Memorial

TOKYO (AP) — Survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are welcoming a decision by the United States to send its first ever delegation to a ceremony marking the anniversary of the attacks, but are asking for something they aren't likely to get — an apology.

Tokyo has praised the decision to send U.S. Ambassador John Roos to the Hiroshima anniversary on Friday, though some survivors of the attack, which is seen by many in Japan as an unjustified use of excessive force against a civilian population, say they have mixed feelings.

If I were the ambassador, I would politely answer all of the press’ questions regarding dropping the atomic bombs, making sure that I pointed out the millions of Japanese that remained alive at the end of the war, who otherwise would have died in suicide attacks on U.S. troops. Or, I could ask if the Japanese would have preferred their population to starve to death, or perhaps be immolated in fire bombing attacks like so many did in Tokyo? All very politely stated, of course, and with a gentle, knowing smile.

Apologize for what? Kicking their asses after they started it all?

We saved countless lives of our soldiers by nuking them to the stoneage...in fact that should be our highest priority - protect our troops...win PERIOD regardless of how the enemy suffers!

No one needs to apologize for Harry Truman.

History has proven over and over that his decision saved thousands of American lives that would have been ended during an Invasion not to mention the millions of Japanese lives ended as collateral damage.

Total war kills totally.

They don’t deserve to memorialize those attacks as a day of national victimhood after what they did before and during WWII.

Not only should we not even consider an apology, but we should take offense to the mere mention of one, and I don’t want some little Obama administration tool going over their and looking apologetic either. We have no business attending this in an official capacity.

We killed more people in one night over Tokyo (8-9 March 1945) in a firebomb raid than we did at Hiroshima or Nagasaki. The only difference was at Tokyo it took 334 B-29s, hundreds of tons of incendiary bombs, and a 40-mph wind to do it. At Hiroshima/Nagasaki, it took three planes each, one bomb each, and a few seconds.

No apology. We did what we had to do. And if the situations had been reversed, with the Japanese having access to the B-29 and atomic bombs and the ability to deliver them to the United States, you could bet the farm that the Japanese would have done it.

Japan knows the "Apologizer in Chief" is currently in the whitehouse so they know odds are good.

But, has Japan ever apologized for their war crimes against US and other allied forces in WW2 like their treatment of and execution of POWs? Have they ever apologized for the sneak attack at Pearl Harbor?

Have they ever apologized for crimes against civilians during ww2 like massacres in locations like Naking, China or the Philippines, or forcing Korean women to be sex slaves for officers.

If we hadn't dropped the big ones and ended the war, my dad would have been part of the invasion force and would have probably been slaughtered on the beaches with the rest of our troops. From what I hear, Normandy was at least possible to invade and succeed. Japan's coast was impossible.

The point about the Japanese lives saved often gets lost. The Japanese plan for the defense of the Home Islands, Ketsu-go, included high school girls charging the Americans with spears. Imagine how sickening would’ve been a battle between soldiers and Marines with machine guns and flame-throwers and civilians with spears.

We may very well have had to fight in Japan twice.

Had we invaded, the Soviets would have also joined the fight, and thus, Japan would most likely have been divided, like Korea and Germany. And of course, the Communists would have gone for the whole thing in a civil war, just like in Korea.

I see the Japanese people in two ways.

There are the Japanese folks that are our friends of today and......... there were the Jap bastards that attacked my country, ultimately causing the deaths of millions.

The former may shake my hand, the latter may rot in hell.

I am so damn sick of this Obama apology crap. I am proud of my country and that bastard in the White House needs to get the hell out.

Apologizing for A-Bomb will actually tick off the Chinese, who are overwhelmingly in favor of the dropping of the bomb since Japan was occupying China at the time.

If Obama apologizes for the A-Bomb he’ll have to immediately turn around to the China and apologize to them for apologizing to Japan.

My father would’ve as well. He was a motor pool sergeant on Leyte but he’d already been told that should Japan be invaded, he’d be going ashore at some point—maybe not in the first wave, but he’d be going there.

Had we been forced to invade Japan with the war prolonged, millions would’ve died on both sides while the Soviet Union took advantage to eat up all the Japanese spoils in Asia. (Don’t forget, the USSR invaded Manchuria on August 9, conquered it in mere days, and sent several hundred thousand Japanese POWs and settlers to the gulags, most never to return. After the firebombings and the A-bombs, that was the final nail in the coffin that convinced Hirohito to surrender.)

Two hundred thousand dead in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or ten million dead from war, disease, and famine after an invasion? Doesn’t seem like all *that* tough a choice.

I think majority of Japanese actually agree with you. Most people I talked to there while obviously not being fans of nuclear weapons understood that total war is total. Japanese fought one as well with Kamikazi and all and ended up loosing. Same as Japanese will never apologize for waging total war most really do not expect anyone to apologize to them. Many are annoyed that after all of the aid they poured into Korea Korean’s are still mad at them. Chinese complaints they just view as pure political crying.

I went to the area where one of the landings was supposed to happen (not sure if true thats what guide told me) and while not nearly as crazy terrain as other parts of Japan. Attacking that would have been incredibly costly, add to that Kamikazi attacking with little radar warning (unlike Okinawa) and the whole thing could go very much south.

Well, I think it is understandable. After all, we had to find some way of topping last year's US military personnel marching in Russia's Victory parade along with the veterans of the Georgia invasion, the Afghan invasion, the iron curtain troops, and the Soviet followers of Stalin.

I think appearing at the Hiroshima memorial to prostrate ourselves is a cleansing, aura enhancing event a lot like clearing your chakra with an older masseuse.

It's getting harder and harder to follow the news without nausea medicine.
