When I visited the USS Arizona Memorial in Hawaii a few years back (1990's) I was struck (astounded, actually) by how many Asians there were there...many of whom appeared to be older.I don't know if they were Japanese but it seems likely that many were partly because Hawaii was a *huge* tourist destination for the Japanese back then.As I was there one thing I wondered was "are they here out of some sort of shame or remorse or is it a victory lap for them?"

Obviously I don't know the answer to that,but....

You didn't see a Shinto shrine there did you?

Japan was a big tourist destination back then and post cards of Pearl Harbor were for sale at every souvenir shop. They were used by Japanese pilots to identify their targets. The ones of Battleship Row were of great help to the attack force. Were we asleep or what?

I have no problem with the U.S. sending a delegation, so long as it's clear that they are not there to apologize, but to gloat. Like during the minute of silence (or whatever) instead of bowing their heads, high five and fist pump. Instead of wearing funeral garb, they should wear Hawaiian shirts and shorts and carry highballs with little umbrellas in them.

If called on to speak publicly, say something to the effect, "Was the A-Bomb, like awesome, or what? I mean you guys all wanted to die for Emperor, but when we accepted your proposal, you folded like a cheap umbrella."

Funny you should ask.

In the late 1990’s one of the retired Military guides (Fiske?) who was actually there during the bombing, and who you see on the History Channel, told me that the Japanese tourists come late, when the park is about to close, as to not be the focus of potential anger and or offend the other tourists

I visited the museum in Nagasaki that depicts the damage done by the atom bomb. I did it out of interest not remorse or doing a victory lap. I was two years old when we bombed Nagasaki. My father and four of his brothers were in the military including places like Tarawa, Salerno, and Anzio. I am sure some of them would have been involved in any invasion of Japan. I have no problem with our use of the weapon, which cut short the war and saved lives and destruction on all sides.

Wife and I visited the Arizona Memorial, the Missouri and the submarine memorial last March.
I would estimate 80 percent of the tourists were young Japanese. They all stayed at one hotel (about a block away from the beach front) and moved by the bus loads, all together. A Japanese woman with a police whistle directed the bus parking and loading.
