Unemployment Benefits for Illegal Immigrants: Colorado Scandal Exposed
National Review The Corner ^ | August 5, 2010 | Jack Fowler

Posted on 08/05/2010 11:20:59 AM PDT by La Lydia

The investigative arm of Colorado’s Independence Institute is reporting that officials at the state’s labor agency defied the law by disabling computer software and thereby allowing “unqualified citizens and illegal aliens” to receive unemployment insurance since early 2009. Here’s the story by Todd Shepherd:

"Independence Investigates has obtained internal emails from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE) showing that a software control intended to prevent the payment of unemployment insurance to unqualified citizens as well as to illegal aliens was shut off in early 2009.

"The emails dictate that former CDLE unemployment insurance director Mike Cullen demanded “Work Order 51662” be given top priority within the department. Completion of the work order would mean various questions asked of someone filing for unemployment regarding citizenship would effectively be ignored by a computer system.

"The documents also show that several individuals within the department immediately raised the issue that the work order might be circumventing the law, specifically House Bill 06-1023. HB 1023 was passed in a special session of the legislature in 2006, and mandated that certain government benefits, such as unemployment insurance, be denied to illegal aliens.

"In one email, an IT technician says, “This seems to be a super fast slam dunk. Do we need anything in writing from [director] Mike Cullen as this seems to be a violation of the law (HB-1023)?”

"Another email from a different IT technician predicted media fallout, saying, “…this ain’t all so hard to do, BUT we will effectively disabling the legislature's HB-1023 which is now state law. When Channel 4 news finds out, lots of people will be pointing (fingers) and saying, ‘it wasn’t me.’”

If this is all true, Mr. Cullen might want to be looking around for a job. Complete report here:

So they can change their software to give checks but California cannot change it’s software to reduce payments/

The obviously left-wing bureaucrat would probably justify his actions by saying something to the effect of “...well these people (illegals) paid into the Unemployment insurance fund via premiums paid by their employers so they should be able to get the benefits...”

That’s like saying if a con man takes out a life insurance policy on a homeless person, makes a few premium payments, and then sees to it that the vagrant’s lifestyle results in his premature death, should be able to collect the death benefit. I don’t think so.

What the left-wing bureaucrat did was, in effect, to say “I don’t care what the Legislature has said, I don’t care what the law is, I am going to give away public funds to people who aren’t entitled to it — because I can.” This is called criminal activity.

Mike Cullen, who was responsible for this questionable directive, now works for a private software company that has contracts with the state to combat unemployment fraud.

"Mr. Cullen might want to be looking around for a job"

Why? he is a 'government worker' probably in a union. Untouchable! A law unto himself. Get over it!

I think they are a bit shallow on this one. Shutting off the software prevented the discovery of the fraud that led to the democrat take over in Colorado. They were already circumventing the law, but lack of records gave them cover and lots of illegal voters.

French anarchist Pierre-Joseph Proudhon was famous for his declaration that -Property is theft! (French: La propriété, c’est le vol!) This should be updated to — “Government is theft”

Since Mike Cullen gave away millions in Colorado taxpayer money I would sentence him to a decade or two in prison. He stole from the taxpayers. This is the same kind of commie parasite who pushes for gay marriage.

I’ll bet Colorado’s budget is tight these days and those squandered millions would come in handy these days.

This would be the Colorado Attorney General office’s task. The attorney general is a Republican who is running for re-election, so he might actually do something about it.

Heh heh. I commented on a TV station’s version of the story (at least they ran it on their website) and asked that very question.
