War On Terror: A flurry of indictments against Somali immigrants accused of aiding al-Qaida, including a number of naturalized U.S. citizens, shows we're still importing people who want to destroy us.
The Justice Department on Thursday announced 14 new indictments of terrorists mostly from Minneapolis, which has a large Somali community. The city has acted as a deadly pipeline routing funding and fighters to al-Qaida in Somalia and other jihad hot spots.
The latest sweep is part of a broader investigation started under the Bush administration that's charged a total of 19 people in not just Minnesota, but California and Alabama as well. Nine are in custody, while 10 are still at large.
"As demonstrated by the charges unsealed today," Attorney General Eric Holder warned, "we are seeing an increasing number of individuals — including U.S. citizens — who have become captivated by extremist ideology and have taken steps to carry out terrorist objectives, either at home or abroad."
At long last, this administration is recognizing the growing terror threat within our borders. But it still doesn't get it. More newsworthy is what Holder left out of his announcement and press release, including the facts that:
• All 19 terrorists charged are Muslim. They're not just "extremists," but Muslim extremists.
• One of them — Omar Hammami — grew up Baptist in the Alabama suburbs before converting to Islam and worshiping at a Muslim Brotherhood-owned mosque there. He wrote that he became convinced that "jihad has become an obligation upon me."
