Getting caffeinated is going to get costlier.
The J.M. Smucker Co. just bumped up the price of most Folgers, Dunkin Donuts, Millstone and Folger Gourmet Selections coffees that are sold retail IN THE U.S., according to Reuters.
The approximate nine percent hike is due to ongoing increases in the cost of green coffee beans.
The price increase will be immediate.
Prices for the aforementioned coffee brands had already been jacked up by an average of four percent in May by Smuckers.
Arabica coffee futures started a steep climb back in June. IN the past eight weeks, the market has increased nearly 35 percent.
Washed Arabica beans, the top quality coffee usually used in brewed coffee, are in tight supply right now, Reuters reports.
Prices for robusta beans, usually processed into inexpensive instant coffee or used in part of a brewed blend as a money saver, are also on the rise. Which means that consumers will soon be shelling out more cash for that cuppa joe.
Good thing I drink tea or Diet Pepsi for my caffeine.
My stockpile list continues to grow as everyday items will soon be VERBOTEN in what was once America:
Ammo (always!)
Gold & Silver
Cigarettes (for bartering)
Toilet Paper
Garden Seeds
Sugar
Salt
Light bulbs
Yeast
Fish Oil
Lard
Toys for my future Grandkids
Ketchup
Plastic bags
Paper bags
Coffee
Get rid of everything on that list except for cigarettes. Stockpile Marlboro Reds. I look you up as Queen of the World after the collapse.
Oh, yawn. Like any globally traded item that is sourced from only a few places (chocolate is another) the coffee bean is subject to sharp price fluctuations in short time periods. It might be much cheaper next year. Nobody is going to swear off joe for something this little. Even the price of Starbucks is mostly service; the retail brew’s price will not change in tandem.
Makes me glad I never liked coffee. Watching the addicts go through withdrawal might be fun for a little while. Serves them right for having to listen to the lot of them carry on like spoiled babies if their coffee isn’t made right or whatever the gripe of the moment is.
Thanks for the tip, LOL! It WILL be Good to Be The Queen. :)
Please add alcohol(liquor) to your list....great bartering item.
Not one word about why the cost is rising. Is it a tax in the producing countries, a shortage, God forbid capitalism.
It would be far better that the price of materials is going up than having a “Tax Stamp”. Think how much cheaper gas would be if the taxes were actually spent only on Highway repairs and the remainder returned to the tax payer. Any costs that don’t involve the government and do result in a profit, help our economy. Every dollar that Congress steals or Obama prints hurts us.
I’m glad I don’t drink coffee.
Know where the neares well is,water is the first item required.
Greedy capitalists conspiring to gouge the little man!
The reasons for the price increase also includes a poor harvest(for the second straight year)in Columbia and nervous investors jumping into commodities trading as they look for a ‘safe’ investment. If any FReeper enjoys a good cup of coffee, buy your beans whole, invest in a good grinder and sit back and enjoy. Fresh groud coffee makes the best cup of coffee and it is significantly cheaper than coffee from a chain.
don’t forget the duct tape.
Amen on the fresh ground coffee. We have some friends I took for coffee snobs till they inspired me to buy a roaster and grind my own. Nothing off the shelf approaches the body and flavor you can get. A fair warning is that it can quickly become an addictive pursuit.
Fish oil AND lard! All bases covered! May I suggest butter, as well?
Tobacco seeds
Dual purpose hardware that can be used to make three or four distillery units.

Actually, people at work appreciate that I buy most of the coffee supplies and won't take any money for the stuff. I've explained three simple rules for my coffee club: first, it's cheaper for me to make everyone coffee then buy my own; second, I don't want money because that makes me responsible for supplies not being there or for not clipping coupons or buying on sale (and it hurts feelings in the end); third, if you feel guilty enough to want to give me money for the free coffee, then donate supplies instead. (I keep a mug handy for when we're out of cups.)
So far, it works.
Don’t forget your phosphate-based cleaning products.
This will not end well.
...you may want to lay in some little 6 oz. packets of Bugler rolling tobacco...they’ll be at your supermarket in the chewing tobacco/snuff section...you won’t have to invest much money that way compared to say a carton of Marlboros....and you’ll still possess the enormous leverage that tobacco will give you in case TSHTF.
Stonewalls...who has rolled many a Bugler in his day.
Got a clean, deep, well right here at ‘The Compound.’ :)
I’m storing the milk and butter, sour and cream cheese temporarly IN the cow. It’s pretty convenient that way, LOL!
Good point! :)
A wonder product.
No chocolate?
Good list. But yer also forgetting whiskey for bartering. And according to cowboy movies it works as antiseptic and anesthesia for bullet wounds.
I didn't know Folgers and Dunkin' Donuts were made by the same outfit...when people say they must have their Dunkin' they are saying they must have their Folgers?
Agrred. I also chuckle when I add up what my coffee habit would have been had I bought retail. Better coffee at a better price. Ahhh...a beautiful thing.
I’m a coffee roaster. I have another browser window open with 35 lb of green beans sitting in my check out cart.
Guess we’ll cut back to one cup a day. That’s not much of a sacrifice to make to bring the price back down. We can control how much we pay for most commodities or services by simply cutting back or cutting them out completely.
Better yet, at the end of the year, put the money you’ve saved into an FDIC insured savings instrument for your old age. You will need it because Social Security...and possibly your pension plan...will be defunct.
The price of my favorite Jo, whole bean Columbian from Sam’s Club, has remained steady at about $12 for 2 pounds so I don’t think I will be giving up the pleasure of a morning coffee due to a 5% increase in price. As I teach my economics students, coffee in this price range is relatively inelastic, that is the demand will not be appreciably changed by small price increases.
Like any agricultural commodity, the prices go up and the prices go down reflecting the weather, currency exchange, political turmoil, wars, strikes, etc. Was always thus.
Lol! I never liked coffee until I moved to South Florida. Then every Brasilian or Colombian I knew wanted to try their own hometown blend. Usually at night. I got addicted but love it. Everyone has their opinion but mine is that it’s one of the ‘little things’ that help life be so wonderfully enjoyable. Either way, cheers and be well.
If you go to Save-a-Lot, coffee half price of Sam’s!!!
Me Miramar, you???
In better times all our coffee was from freshly ground beans. Now I wait until Walgreen’s runs a special and then I stock up - like this weekend they have 2 for $5.00. I bought 10. That will at least get me through the month!
See if you can get some whole bean Eight O’Clock brand coffee. Consumer Reports did a taste test on the most common commercially available coffees and Eight O’Clock came out on top.
I moved to Arizona last year - : )
I’ve been getting the 8 O’Clock Bokar Blend when it’s on sale on Amazon. Four bags including shipping for under $15.
A very smart move keep it hid.
