SALT LAKE CITY — KSL 5 News has obtained a draft document that outlines a huge change in how the federal government wants to manage federal land in Utah, and one Utah congressman says it makes him furious.
Rep. Rob Bishop, R-Utah, whose office also just received the document, said he's angry because it would put virtually all land management power in the hands of the White House.

"They have clearly been dragging their feet, and they don't want to let us know what they're trying to do," Bishop said. He is especially concerned about portions of the document that recommend using the Antiquities Act, "should the legislative process not prove fruitful." The act gives the president power to designate a national monument with no public or legislative input.
The U.S. Department of the Interior released a statement Thursday saying, "The preliminary internal discussion draft reflects some brainstorming discussions within BLM, but no decisions have been made about which areas, if any, might merit more serious review and consideration."
"Their brainstorming session was how to do this without engaging Congress, without having to go to Congress for approval," Bishop said.
There are those who support what is a radical new departure in land management — the idea of protecting whole ecosystems instead of just individual parcels.

The government land grabs to keep people in the big cities where they can control them. In many states, the feds own 80%+ of the states land. You can’t buy it, build on it or sometimes even go on the land. They will say they are saving it for future generations. What generation and why? For what other purpose is the government taking all the land? I believe that 80% of land in Oregon is owned by the Feds. Why?
I’m thinking, there should be no federal land. All National Parks should even revert to the states.

The one common theme is how to enforce their will by going around congress. You’d think congress would start to feel a little slighted eventually.
Didn’t the Clinton administration do this with the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument to prevent any coal mining from occurring there?

A ton of it. Rivals OPEC reserves. Mostly oil shale. Salazar halted leases for oil and gas development when he took office in January, 2009, so they have already blocked any attempt at extraction. I think this land grab was what they were planning to do all along.
They are saving it for when they nationalize the energy industry....then you will see how fast the drilling, etc. will start...with all the money going to the govt.
