.- After U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker struck down California's Proposition 8 on Wednesday afternoon, Cardinal Francis George, president of the U.S. bishops' conference, and Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, the chairman of the bishops' Committee for the Defense of Marriage, described the ruling as a "misuse of law."
Cardinal George stated, Marriage between a man and a woman is the bedrock of any society. The misuse of law to change the nature of marriage undermines the common good.
It is tragic that a federal judge would overturn the clear and expressed will of the people in their support for the institution of marriage. No court of civil law has the authority to reach into areas of human experience that nature itself has defined, the U.S. bishops' president insisted.
Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Chair of the Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, also weighed in on the ruling, saying, Citizens of this nation have uniformly voted to uphold the understanding of marriage as a union of one man and one woman in every jurisdiction where the issue has been on the ballot. This understanding is neither irrational nor unlawful."
Marriage is more fundamental and essential to the well being of society than perhaps any other institution. It is simply unimaginable that the court could now claim a conflict between marriage and the Constitution, the Archbishop of Louisville said.
The Catholic bishops' reactions were echoed by other pro-family and pro-marriage groups.
The lawyers for Protectmarriage.com, the defendants in the ruling, plan to appeal the case.
Bears repeating!

So much for the people’s will... what does it matter when some black-robed tyrant can strike whatever we do, down? As if “The Agenda” wasn’t plain enough...
The Catholic vote in California leans liberal for the most part, and pro-abortion! They went for Obama in droves! The politicians strong-arm them every time on their guilt over “social justice”.... and now the Catholic leadership are unhappy when gay groups want justice and the ‘right’ to marry? They helped to create this monster.
Good for them for saying this. But in the same breath they’ll turn around and demand amnesty for pretty much any criminal who wants to plant themselves in the US for the free, taxpayer-funded handouts. The Catholic Church has no idea how to build or be part of an effective political constituency.
So you are saying they should be MORE Catholic.
I agree.
These aren’t the same Catholic bishops that subvert American law by giving sanctuary to illegal aliens or demanding that we give illegals amnesty, are they?
Fallible men, in an infallible Church. But you’re right, this is good, and I agree, while being disappointed with the opinions regarding illegal alien criminals. This is a misuse of the law, and I sincerely hope that the trip to visit the Supremes doesn’t take too long.
"Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony lambasted legislation passed Monday by Arizona lawmakers that would crack down on illegal immigrants, likening it to "German Nazi and Russian Communist techniques" that compelled people to turn each other in."
"The Arizona legislature just passed the country's most retrogressive, mean-spirited, and useless anti-immigrant law," he wrote on his blog. "The tragedy of the law is its totally flawed reasoning: that immigrants come to our country to rob, plunder, and consume public resources. That is not only false, the premise is nonsense."
... the consent of the governed.
Yea but illegal invaders are OK. Go fiqure.
Same thing with Americans, as we know MANY Americans hate America. I think is probably the same principle they don't want to go anywhere else, so they want to water down the Church/Nation they live in.
Ah, it does my heart good to read comments from bishops that make me proud of them.
As for me and my family, we will follow the Lord!"
As Californians, we vote our conscience and our consciences are MUCH DIFFERENT than Nancy Pelosi's!
We worked to get prop 8 passed, only to have the will of the people nullified by one judge.
It would be great if this one judge could also pull a Merriam-Webster and change terminal cancer to the common cold! So many lives could be saved and so much research could be used for other purposes!
"A rose by any other name is still a rose!" Marriage is still the union of one eligible man and one eligible woman! Two homosexuals living together and calling it marriage is still an aberration of marriage, it doesn't matter how many satanic ministers give them the blessings from hell!
Faithful Catholics in California and not so faithful Catholics need your prayers. You have no idea what it is like living in Sodom and Gomorrah! The city named after St. Francis is decadent. We need another St. Francis to step up to the plate and clean house!
Haven't heard about Bishop Kurtz on this issue --- I really like him, he used to be our Bishop down here in Knoxville (before he was given a bigger seat in Louisville) and he did an excellent job here. A holy guy, and nobody's fool. I'd be pretty disappointed if he fell into the same error.
Anybody know?
Mother Angelica, put Cardinal Roger Mahony in his place, please!
I agree with the bishops’ views on the travesty of allowing homosexual marriage, which is an oxymoron if there ever was one. I can see how Roman Catholics can be tools for liberalism. The RCC has been preaching social justice and helping the poor for so long that many or most of them will fall for the liberal line every time. The sad fact is the most American Roman Catholics pay no attention to the teachings of their faith. They are as someone said on FR, accidental Catholics.
BTTT!
**It is simply unimaginable that the court could now claim a conflict between marriage and the Constitution.**
Repeating it again!
