The one in 1962 was over twice as large....
It means that there is so much extra ice there it can’t hold its own weight.
Now that this has broken off, why hasn’t there been a tidal wave?? Wouldn’t this have raised the sea level at least a foot? I thought that was what would happen when giant chunks of ice (this qualifies as giant) fall into the ocean!!

If can’t pull its own weight then we are going to have to have the thing try and get a job with the Obama administration.
“no Gore-bull warming there.”
Yes, and the Gorebull warming kooks, even here on FR, obviously do not see:
“The last time the Arctic lost such a large chunk of ice was in 1962.” Back then the kooks were screaming global freezing.
The point being, this is nothing new,

See this is why i hate these articles, they never tell menwhuch way to run in panic. Or even more crucial when is it required to burry head in sand.
maybe it will drown all those elite on Malibu, and the east coast
You can bet your last dollar that there are plenty of fools out there that believe that is evidence of AGW. They also get a blank look on their face when you ask them if the climate should be such that the glaciers keep growing all the way to the equator. Anything that large which is only supported by the sea is evertually going to break off when it extends far enough from the shore.
What I find interesting (but not a bit surprised) is that they decided to leave out a quote from Muenchow that Wired Magazine included:
A 100-square-mile block of ice 600 feet thick has calved off one of the largest ocean-bordering glaciers in Greenland. The Arctic hasnt lost a chunk of ice that big since 1962.Wired.comIn the early morning hours of August 5, an ice island four times the size of Manhattan was born in northern Greenland, oceanographer Andreas Muenchow of University of Delaware said in a press release August 6. The freshwater stored in this ice island could keep the Delaware or Hudson rivers flowing for more than two years. It could also keep all U.S. public tap water flowing for 120 days.
Petermann glacier is located about 600 miles south of the North Pole. Muenchow and a team of scientists have been studying it since 2003. They had been expecting the glacier to calve, but this piece is much larger than anyone had expected.
The glacier lost about one-quarter of its 43-mile long floating ice-shelf.
The new chunk will enter Nares Straight, an ocean channel between Canada and Greenland, float towards Newfoundland and Laborador, and ultimately end up in the Atlantic Ocean.
The massive calving of the ice-shelf is likely part of a natural cycle for Petermann Glacier rather than a dramatic change that has never been seen before, Muenchow said.
Petermann Glacier has stayed about the same size over the last century, Muenchow said. Well, up until yesterday.
Look up the word Calf in a old dictionary and you will get iceberg.
“A chunk of ice four times the size of Manhattan has calved from Greenland’s Petermann Glacier, scientists announced today.”
Sometimes these eco-whores outsmart themselves. The only thing THAT bit of info tells me is that it took a heap of precipitation and COLD to form a glacier large enought to produce a “calf” that large! Where does AGW figure in THAT picture, without twisting sensible logic into an unrecognizable pretzel?!
Someone tow this sucker to Russia!
I didn't realize Gore-bull warming had been going on that long...............
Exactly what I was going to say. What happened then to cause it and what happened in between to stop it? Could it be just sort of a natural thing, independent of man, CFCs, ozone and CO2?
Never mind that this has been going on long before there was any means of systematically recording it.
They all gave that up after the non-existent "Little Ice Age," when all their computers froze solid (among other things.)
