N. Korea may conduct 3rd nuclear test: defector

SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- North Korea will not abandon its nuclear ambitions despite international sanctions, and may conduct its third nuclear test in the near future, a former senior North Korean official said in an interview aired Saturday.

"North Korea believes nuclear arms are its most important defensive tool, and the country will not abandon its nuclear ambitions," Hwang Jang-yop said in an interview with the South Korean national broadcaster KBS.Data picture

Hwang was interviewed by KBS on July 23, and KBS aired it on Saturday.

Hwang, a former secretary of the ruling Workers' Party and the highest-ranking North Korean official to defect to South Korea, is the author of North Korea's "juche" or self-reliance ideology that forms the backbone of the country's regime.

The 87-year-old man also said the communist state may conduct a nuclear test in defiance of international sanctions.

Well, actually this is expected. N. Korea will convene a party conference not held for decades in September. It is also reportedly planning to have a largest military parade in its history in Oct.

September or early Oct. seems a likely candidate.

I am expecting 20+ kt blast this time, which could silence any lingering doubts on NK’s nuclear capability. If bomb’s yield is suspiciously small again, that would jeopardize the regime’s ability to blackmail other countries, even though they could still have enough stock of bio-chemical weapons.

Agreed, once they show the world they can pop off a real crowd pleaser its a game changer. Even China will need to take them a bit more seriously...

Not sure which country’s tech comes first, but they will exchange their know-how to each other. Iran’s and N. Korea’s would become one and the same then.
