WOULD YOU BUY A CHEVY "VOLT"? FROM OBAMA? FROM GOVERNMENT MOTORS? UNKNOWN SPECS, INSURANCE, REPAIRS!

Have you driven a Chevy Volt

The headline is a play an early ‘80s Ford car ad campaign. Have you driven a Ford. . .lately? was the tag line and it's instructive when considering Chevrolet's new Volt, the car that'll make GM a "leader" in green vehicle technology and create green blue collar jobs. The answer to Have you driven a Chevy Volt . . .lately? is most likely to be no.

I really love cars, and it pains me to criticize a vehicle, since my premise is all cars are good, some are better than others. Plus I know people at GM who love cars and worked diligently on this car, even if they thought it an answer to a question no one asked. While the Volt looks like smart product planning and business management to the Obama regime - people who don't know or care about cars - unfortunately, it fails on several levels.

Start with a $41,000 list price and with the $7500 Federal tax credit it drops to $33,500. I would even speculate that California, with a $20 billion deficit, could even be willing to spend money it doesn't have by kicking in a state hybrid vehicle credit to shave the price slightly. Regardless, tax credits mean more of what we don't need: government spending.

Oh, it passes all of the US Government DOT tests? That’s reassuring and a guarantee that I will not buy one.

That’s part of it, but also there are a bunch of people who would prefer not to use gasoline.

The Middle East, Peak Oil, unpredictable wide price swings, things like that.

Not Global Warming BS.

Agree. They have been discussing the Volt for years. I thought it was pretty interesting back when Bush was President. Now I guess because Obama is President we have to hate electric cars.

Some people might want to buy one if their electricity costs are low and they live in a city. If you can charge the battery when the electricity prices are lower, that’s an advantage.

Arguments about tax credits are valid but have little to do with the technology.

The batteries are warrantied for 100,000 miles — GM clearly expects them to last somewhat longer. These batteries are much more advanced than the repurposed laptop batteries used in the Tesla.

They will be recycled. Laptop and cellphone batteries can be recycled — provided you turn them in. The Volt batteries are much larger and more expensive — people will be motivated financially to recycle them.

There are plenty of valid criticisms about the Volt — starting with the fact that they're being subsidized by tax dollars. Using easily falsified arguments doesn't help the case against the Volt.

"This “car” is the perfect representation of the Obama presidency. It sums it up perfectly."

"The Volt was put into development in earnest in 2006 before Obama was president."

The Socialists took over the Congress in 2006 (Jan '07). Same-O, Same-O

It was another EPA (Socialist) boondoggle mandate that helped them go bankrupt.

Lithium is worth enough that the batteries will be melted down or have the lithium chemically extracted, and the lithium used for more batteries. But that isn’t cheap.

The Volt is an electric car that carries a tank of gas and an engine with it. Perfect government efficiency.

Except to be trendy and hip and faux “green”...

See Toyota Prius. I see most of them zipping along passing me showing off their economy. My wife wouldn’t be seen in one and that is good enough for me. Frankly for six to seven months of potential winter driving, I much prefer rear wheel drive. An option that is becoming more and more difficult to find, and is being replaced by all wheel drive, which is not nearly as fuel efficient, and much more expensive to drive over long term, and not nearly as fun or traditional in the driving department.

I will never buy another new GM or Chrysler product; it’s possible I would consider a pre-2008 used GM or Chrysler car but Ford will get all of my business henceforth.

Do you know of the Engineers at GM who were instrumental in creating the Chevy Volt? If you do (and I doubt you do) then tell me how you know their political affiliation?

You bring up a good point Truthguy.

I know of 2 Freepers claiming that were on the Volt Program, and via their technical prowess I believe them. The Engr I knew via social circles on the program ( lost touch with in the last 6 months) and is as Conservative as us.

What so many here don't get and I have tried to explain is this. It is a techno-marvel and they have found a sweet spot because of the Li-ion batteries power density it allow a normal chassis not an aero-aluminum toy (EV1) and a pony motor to have a true electric drive train. What they have created is a semi-electric if you will, shooting for the average trip of 40 miles via the plug in, and do the long trip off the pony motor.

What kicks it to the curb for many is the GM moniker and the price point via the batteries being so expensive....

When you do a Google image search of [Obama volt] you get dozens of this:

... but not a single one ( at least I didn't ) of him actually sitting in it. "The press."

I'd suggest not using Google. Their search capabilities, once probably the best around, are no longer as strong as some of their competitors.

I had a vivid reminder of this recently; I had a trivial query, and after giving Google many chances (way too many), I decided to use dogpile, and immediately got the answer I was looking for.

For news photographs, I find that searching using the form at http://news.yahoo.com/photos to be the most useful place.

Don’t worry, the feds will demand that US agencies, states and counties buy these POS’s to pump up sales.
