We know you love Windows XP, and you're in good company. Millions of Windows XP users are fans of the operating system, and many depend on Windows XP to run earlier applications and hardware that is not compatible with Windows 7. Windows 7 is designed to be compatible with the most popular hardware and software products you use every day and even though we are ending the sale of Windows XP on October 22, 2010, we still plan to provide support for Windows XP until April 2014.
(Excerpt) Read more at microsoft.com ...
I've converted most of my XP machines to Win7, and am very happy, not looking back (I keep a few XP VMs around for compatibility testing, of course, just like Win2000). XP is very long in the tooth.
But this is clearly THE END.
Support for another few years, of course -- Microsoft knows better than to drop it cold.
NOTE: This is not a Microsoft- or Windows-bashing thread. The tech cease-file applies equally to Windows threads as to Apple or Linux or any other. If you don't like Windows, don't buy it. If you don't like Microsoft, don't buy their products. Simple as that. No flames, no trolls, please. Don't come here just to bash Windows folks for their choice of OS. Thanks!
There's plenty of business impact from this announcement, and I already see a lot of scurrying around among the IT people...
Swordmaker: This isn't an Apple thread, so I don't think an Apple ping is necessary (I leave that up to your discretion). But I thought you'd be interested.
You’re probably already aware of this, but Hi anyway...
I still use XP.
Another good reason to migrate to LINUX. Dell is still selling XP Pro on machines.
XP was great. Vista was a mess. Windows 7 is great again. Time to move on...
Same here. I’ve been pretty happy with it.
“I still use XP.”
I do as well as my organization. IMO XP is the most reliable Microsoft OS I have ever used.
They finally get a version that works well, so they want to kill it..................
You've got support for another four years. Enjoy it. :)
The strength of Win 7 also speaks to the fact that Microsoft can learn from its mistakes, something I once thought they were incapable of doing.
I have windows 7 Home. Should I upgrade to Professional to get XP???
Dell is still selling XP Pro on machines.
Rumor has it that this is nothing more than a bastardized version of Vista made to look and feel like XP after the initial deluge of complaints about Vista started coming in from business users.
Yeah, *sigh* I know what you mean. But Microsoft is in business to make money, and sales of new products are where money happens. Supporting XP ad infinitum is not profitable....
The good news is that Win7 is really solid, and upgrading from XP, while something of a pain (have to re-install), is worthwhile.
I’ve taken the XP on my work machine and make it “look” like Windows ‘95 (It’s really easy to do). I love it when people try to use my computer and stare at the screen puzzled, especially the “wonks” and “gurus”..................
Not for long. I received this today from Dell:
The Dell Small Business segment has confirmed the last date to purchase systems with Windows XP OEM pre installed.> Rumor has it that this is nothing more than a bastardized version of Vista made to look and feel like XP after the initial deluge of complaints about Vista started coming in from business users.<;/I>THE LAST DATE TO ORDER SYSTEMS WITH WINDOWS XP PREINSTALLED IS OCTOBER 1ST 2010.
View the Microsoft announcement for full details about Windows XP End of Life for OEM partners at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-xp/end-of-sale.aspx
Please contact me as soon as possible to place any system orders that require Windows XP preinstalled to ensure they ship by the 10/22 deadline.
If by "this" you mean Win7, it is really "Vista-Done-Right". It doesn't look like XP any more than Vista did.
Win7 is what Vista should have been.
It’s a 10-year-old OS.
They need to spend their resources on the future, not grandfathering Luddites that never wish to upgrade because of something the read on the internet that makes it seem like XP is something just short of perfection that has not been bested by recent offerings.
Both Vista, and 7 are perfectly fine to use.
Microsoft is also playing games with current XP installations.
Suddenly, things that have worked for years are starting to mysteriously fail AFTER a Windows Update.
I know microsoft plays these games. I caught them at it before.
LOL - we still have a few computers here at work running Windows 98.
Maybe GM ought to try that.................
Having used and supported both, I'll take Win7 over Vista by a mile.
As I've said before (and above), Win7 is just Vista-Done-Right. But the difference is remarkable, in terms of usability.
IMO, of course. :)
If you REALLY REALLY want to have fun, use a screenshot of a Linux Screen as wallpaper on your Company Windows XP computer.
Our IP guy was walking by and had a total berserk sh!t hemmorage, until he calmed down enough to see it was a joke..
Actually, if you consider the difficulty they face, trying to keep all those hundreds of millions of disparate XP installations working, after 10 years of changes, it's remarkable that they still work at all.
I don't doubt that Microsoft plays those games. But I'd say the vast majority of things that spontaneously "break" have more to do with the individual installation and other applications, than any nefarious activity on MS's part.
Loved XP.
But 7 is a real winner.
Now if someone could just help me get rid of the (false positive?)Conficker worm that MSE keeps reporting, that no other malware software reports.

Try this...........

This would give him a coronary..........
After the Vista fiasco, Microsoft really has no choice but to support XP until Windows 7 has enough of a track record to encourage cautious IT managers to make the upgrade. Too much risk of “the L word” otherwise....
XP is good. Windows 7 is much better.
You're one mean Bastard User From Hell. I like you. :-)
IMO- by the time 2014 comes along, Microsoft will have yet another new and improved memory chomping OS in the pipeline. Hopefully, it won't be like Windows ME or Vista.
If I downgrade (aka "upgrade") to a newer version, there will surely be some applications and software that no longer works. (And, I just hate that.)
.
More power to ya. And I must say, you're not alone -- I have friends and family who still prefer 98.
I try to keep them off the Internet, though. The lack of security is a menace to the rest of us! :)
With Gates being an Obamaton pro-death panel supporter, when will Ubuntu etc become a poltical statement like the left driving a Prius and tell Bill what we think of him and his company (even though he is out of it in many ways)?
Will this be a way Freepers express their dersire and efforts in "Going Galt"?
As of the end of July 2010, Windows XP is the most widely used operating system in the world with a 54.6% market share, having peaked at 76.1% in January 2007.Kinda hard to declare XP "dead" with over half of the world still using it!
After using Vista and 7 on 2 computers for awhile, I had to go back and deal with XP on a laptop. Wow it’s a pain, driver problems and the network interface is horrendous in comparison.
Good riddance.
Isn't Win 7 really the release version of the Vista beta test?
I suspect you mean 2001, not 2000 (XP was RTM'ed in August 2001), unless you mean that (like me) you were privy to copies of Whistler....

I've been known to refer to 7 as "Vista-SP3"... :)
One of the best (albeit harshest) of the Mac/PC ads. Love it!
XP runs the sepcialized software I use to make a living.
Win 7 would cost me close to $15,000 for newer versions, plus ongoing code key fees, whereas presently, the version I have works better, has fewer printing 'issues', and no monthly/quarterly fee.
I'm not jumping on that bandwagon in any hurry.
I think it is more that Win 7 is the OS Vista should have been but in the rush for more money got sent out a “few days” too early...
Honored!
It was the Red Hat Valahalla release..the one with a big redbearded Viking holding a hammer.
What saved the guy from a stroke was when he saw all the little windows desktop icons scattered around the screen.
"WHO TOLD YOU YOU COULD PUT LINUX ON A COMPANY COM..."
"Oh."
"You @sshole...Hahahahhaa.."
Look, trying not to be snarky here, but ..... so what?
An OS's job should be to provide a way for the CPU, display, keyboard, printer, net adapter, and storage to talk to each other.
Everything else can be done through applications programs.
XP (especially as it is available in 64-bit) is no way whatever obsolete, or even obsolescent, for what an OS really needs to do.
Frankly I think the more mature, universally supported by peripherals, and universally tested and documented the OS is, the better.
Of course XP IS obsolete for the purpose of displaying dancing, cascading translucent 3D windows upon my screen. I have yet to cry myself to sleep over the fact that my XP and Linux machines won't do that.
They can have my Windows XP when they pry it from my cold, dead hard drive.
I think we know the answer to that.
This is why I am beginning to REALLY hate MicroSoft. It took me a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG time to migrate to XP from Windows 98 because XP was so “junky” when it first came out.
MicroSoft worked hard and got it stable and I finally upgraded.
Then came Vista. HUGH piece of junk!! But MicroSoft, rather than let the market decide, decided FOR us and crammed Vista down our throats, disguised as Windows 7. And, to make sure that the cramming was complete, they have made getting earlier versions of Windows virtually impossible and now will end sales of XP (as if you can buy a copy now!).
Apple is starting to look better and better.
And, dayglored, FR is an open discussion site. If you don’t want negative comments about a topic, don’t post the topic!
XP and 98SE will nevertheless live, and be in significant use long after Win7 is forgotten.
This is because there is considerable software in heavy use, that will remain in use because there is no replacement for it, that is not supported by current versions of windows.
.
No, you're fine. Windows 7 is great.
