KDKA ^ | Aug 11, 2010 | Andy Sheehan

Harper recently issued new guidelines to his officers to no longer check the immigration status of a person and to leave enforcement of immigration laws to federal officers. Harper says police need good relations with the immigrant community and should not be feared.

“Plus a Mexican roofer once told my buddy he prefers living in Ohio because you can’t buy beer in the 7-elevens here.”

(L) There is a move on to sell booze in certain Giant Eagle locations. I believe there are a couple that already have it. But it’s a slow process. We’ve had state stores forever and those employees don’t want to give up their jobs. And I suppose if we did have liquor sold in ordinary stores, beer distributors will eventually go under too.

It would be nice if we could sell beer, wine and liquor in supermarkets, drugstores and so on. I’ve been to cities and states where it’s done. Really good selections and the prices are consistently lower than here in PA. The claim is that by having the state control the booze, we would have fewer drunk driving and other crimes committed under the influence. I don’t think that’s happened here in PA.

A Giant Eagle near me sells beer now. In the legal fiction of a separate restaurant that just happens to be in the middle of the supermarket.

That I can handle.

I oppose selling the state stores cause our politicians in Harrisburg would just use the big pile of cash to enrich themselves and their cronies, buy votes, and convert a yearly revenue into debt through a bond issue of some sort.

Does anyone doubt that?

You may be right, but the state store system is archaic and just not practical. It’s one more example of government trying to run a business and failing miserably at it.

They sell booze. They submit money to the treasury. Some stores are even open on Sunday now.

That’s pretty practical to me.

Usually excellent. Authentic food, good service and very reasonable prices. I have a friend who eats at the Butler location every day. I only get there once a week myself.

About 3 years ago, the apartment complex I lived in up in North Hills had the exterior trim on the apartments painted. I don't know what company was hired, but every painter was obviously Hispanic and spoke to each other in espanol - not a word of English.

I don't know how one goes about letting certain authorities know there is a possibility of illegals doing work but I was tempted. And yet, I hesitated - I lived alone and was concerned if there would be some retaliation from the landlords, or the painting company, or the workers.

Given that our INS/ICE is not exactly diligent about investigating such claims, you were probably better off not reporting.
