Schoolhouse eyes fence as border crime deterrent
Nogales International ^ | August 12, 2010 | Denise Holley

The superintendent of the Little Red Schoolhouse has ordered a seven-foot-high fence topped with barbed or concertina wire to be built around the facility as protection against border-related crime.vJames Cruice, superintendent of Santa Cruz Elementary District No. 28, said he wants a barrier between the school and the Santa Cruz River, where people and contraband move north from Mexico, he said. And so on Friday, as teachers hauled books to their classrooms in preparation for the start of classes Monday, workers assembled the fence behind the school complex on Duquesne Road at State Route 82, approximately 3 ½ miles north of the border.

Unlike schools in town, “we’re close to the border, we’re totally exposed here,” Cruice said.

Social studies teacher Shawn Euphrat said the school has experienced break-ins at the hands of suspected illegal border-crossers. Once someone stole food from the refrigerator and left a computer on with a map of routes to Tucson, he said.

But Cruice says he hopes the fence will do more than just inhibit illegal immigrants from accessing the facility. He also wants to discourage Border Patrol agents and sheriff’s deputies from crisscrossing the school grounds while pursuing border-crime suspects.

Carrie Pottinger, a nearby resident, said the fence was “a perfect example of the drastic measures locals have to take to protect themselves. We’ll be looking at razor wire out our back window." ...

Smugglers sometimes use the Kino Springs area, especially at night, Escalante said. The nearby area was also the site of a plain-clothes bust by Nogales police officers in June that resulted in Mexican drug smugglers issuing a threat against off-duty NPD officers who seize drug loads...

A school district is have to build its own border fence. It has come to this, our border security is so lax. What I don't understand about this is that there is an "official" border fence at Nogales and all across that part of Arizona. I wish someone who is from down that way would explain where this school is vis a vis the fence DHS built.

Wow....

Fences DO work???? Even the White house has one!

Pretty soon we’ll all have to be gated in to keep out the invasion.

Another area on US soil where US authority has been ceded to illegals and drug smugglers, leaving the school district to shift for itself! What a fricking disgrace.

There is no barbed wire or razor wire on the border fence. I have watched Mexican men who are fairly young and not too fat vault over the fence in Tijuana several times.

The Little Red Schoolhouse is located on Duquesne Road, which leads to Washington Mountain and scores of old mining digs that rockhounds once loved to prowl. No more. The border mountains are now scarey places and owned by illegals.

That's because the so called leaders in the Department of Homeland Insecurity have no idea of how to properly use barbed/razor wire to channel avenues of approach and use tangle foot wire to slow the enemy's approach.

Let the troops lay it out a a Tactical Defense Exercise. They'll do it right.

Yes. I worked down there until 2008. The border patrol does the best they can watching the hot spots. You should go to Otay Mesa and look at the hills east of the port. The terrain rises and the fence ends. There is so much traffic that with the naked eye you can see the well worn foot trails leading from Mexico into the USA. Those border patrol agents working there at night have very dangerous jobs.

The schoolhouse is located on the Nogales-Patagonia highway. To the west of the highway is the Santa Cruz River, which is usually dry. The west-east road past the schoolhouse is Duquesne.
