In 1939, the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to let Marian Anderson perform before an integrated audience at Constitution Hall. The Board of Education of the then-segregated District also refused to let her perform in the auditorium of a white public high school. So Anderson turned to a symbol of freedom: the Lincoln Memorial. That April, Anderson held an open-air concert on the steps of the monument to the end of slavery and the ideals of the Republic.

Then arrest you ignorant Nazi!

I would have kept on singing!

“Demonstation” my butt!
What is not “neutral” about the National Anthem?
Do you want to answer that question in front of a judge?

It’s too one-sided. You can’t be singing songs that make other countries feel left out and the self esteem damaged! We have to sing songs that make every one feel equally as good like Kumbayah!/s

Gee Richie and Potsie sang "My Country Tis of Thee" inside a crowded 3D theatre, and didn't get arrested.

Zackly! If you can’t sing something nice (and equally as pleasing to all ears), don’t sing anything at all. Didn’t your mother teach you that?

When I was in high school, our choir took a two week trip to NYC and Wash. DC., around 1971 or 72 over Easter vacation - yes, it was actually called Easter vacation - not spring break. We sang The National Anthem on the Staten Island ferry as we passed the Statue of Liberty. The people loved it and applauded. It was a different time. We also sang at some monuments in DC, too, and on the steps of the Capital if I remember correctly. It always drew an appreciative crowd. And we had over a hundred kids, too. No one ever kicked us out.
