Sen. Reid holds Reno rally to celebrate 75 years of Social Security
Last Updated: Thursday August 12, 2010 6:30pm PDT

Reno, NV - Social Security is turning 75 years old and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid held a rally for senior citizens in Reno Thursday to celebrate.

Social Security has been a hot topic in the race for Reid's Senate seat against Republican opponent Sharron Angle.

Angle says Reid is trying to kill Social Security by raiding its "trust fund."

Reid is reminding voters of Angle's words during before the Republican primary election. At that time, Angle said Social Security needed to be phased out. She has since softened her stance, saying instead that the program should be protected.

Reid says one way to save Social Security it to stop scaring Americans.

"Stop frightening the American people," Reid said in Reno Thursday. "Stop having people say they're going to get rid of it. Social Security is strong and powerful."

Strong and powerful as in the odor of something that has gone unmistakably rotten. Reid must take everyone for idiots.

Harry, you lying old dog, you know as well as anyone, for the first time in history Social Security ran in the red this month. For the first time, more money was paid out in benefits than was received in deposits.

"Stop frightening the American people," Reid said in Reno Thursday. "Stop having people say they're going to get rid of it. Social Security is strong and powerful."

I don't know which proposition is scarier: (1) Reid is lying or (2) Reid actually believes what he's saying.

I just received my social security statement in the mail the other day. It did mention that benefits would be reduced significantly, by like 1/3, in 2037, due to running out of money.

That’s if there really was a “trust fund”, which there isn’t. The fact is everything in the “trust fund” is simply obligations owed by the taxpayers. Social Security will actually be in the red (collecting less in SS taxes than it pays out) by the end of the decade.

If the CEO of a publicly traded corporation told as big a whopper about his company’s financial state as Reid just told about the federal government’s, he’d potentially be facing some serious jail time.

For Harry Reid’s information the so called Social Security trust fund is claimed to possess assets in the form of treasury bonds.

I guess Reid doesn’t know that bonds are debt and that whatever assets are possessed by the Social Security trust fund are debts to the General Fund which means that the national debt really is much bigger than is claimed.

In reality it’s a wash.

I need somebody to do this math for me.....what was the national debt when the Democrats took over Congress with Bush as lame duck? What is it NOW, adding in the money Harry Reid says is possessed by the Social Security trust fund?????

That would be a perfect campaign ad for Republicans......

Republicans never counted the Social Security trust fund bonds as an asset, so they never counted them as part of the national debt to the General Fund....and since the Harry Reid Democrats want to count the bonds as an asset to Social Security, then really he’s added that asset amount to the national debt..and so...

The Republicans can credibly argue that since 2006 elections, that Democrats have increased the national debt from like $6 trillion to $16 trillion, going up to like $26 trillion if Obama serves 2 terms....

Now THAT”S a campaign add
