HILLSBOROUGH, N.H. (AP) - Federal stimulus money has helped repair a "bridge to nowhere" in New Hampshire.
Recovery.gov, the government website that tracks stimulus spending, says the 19th century stone bridge in Hillsborough was being preserved and resurfaced to "better accommodate pedestrians and bicycles." The old bridge, however, ends in a field with an 8-foot drop.
More than $150,000 from the federal stimulus bill was awarded for the project.

Well surely with $150,000 dollars they can buy some fill dirt to fill in that 8 foot drop.
Nahhhh. That's way too easy. The government way is to lower the bridge down 8 feet.
It would probably just wash away the next time the water came up.
One of the local pols seized upon this and made an effective ad.....pictures of bridge to nowhere:

Great video!
One has to ask: even if this *was* an important project, should it cost $150k??? That seems like a lot of money to preserve a bridge that doesn’t even need to support automobile weights.
The sign at the end of the video is a real howler...
Were the contractors related to Shaheen?
Someone should tell that lame Associated Press reporter to get off his/her lazy ass and tell us where that bridge USE TO GO.
Sheeeeesh....
Um.... did you see the video?
it is an old bridge, cut off at one end, and they took video from a SECOND, fully function automavbile bridge right next to it.
If anythng the old bridge should be torn down as an eyesore
It used to go where the new bridge right next to it now goes, which is why it doesn’t go there anymore.
Um.... did you see the video?
No, not until you mentioned it.
jacjmm was very helpful in supplying the additional information.
But my condemnation of the lazy AP reporter stands.
He/she treated us like idiots.
There was no such information contained in the AP story that was published and posted, either at the source or the excerpt posted here.
I agree you are 100% corret about the media- but I just wanted to warn you that your sentiment was misplaced here (as would have been obvious to anyone else who saw the video first)
I hate when people get smarmy in correcting me so I hope I didnt offend you. I dont mind being corrected (at all! please tell me when I am wrong so I don;t look foolish) but it irks me when some one says ‘Oh you are such and idiot for [some minor error]- or worse “Ohh you must hate children and want people to die you blanket blank [liberals do that one a lot]

No, not at all.
In fact, I was pleasantly surprised that the additional information was already available and I didn't have to go googling for it to satisfy my curiosity. My rant was directed solely at the sloppy reporting. I had no idea whether this was a boondoggle or a project with some kind of legitimate local historic value. (There are some such structures that are worth preservation due to quaint scenic/tourist appeal etc.)
But in this case, I think they still should've spent the money. Only the remnants of the old bridge should've been torn down and removed for public safety, not restored. Cripes... someone's gonna get hurt trespassing on that thing.

Hmmmmm.... OTOH, they used to build those old bridges so solid that maybe they figure that it's cheaper to maintain it for safety than it is to pay somebody five times more to tear it down and cart the rubble away.
