A Metro Police radio recording reveals new details about what happened in the minutes leading up to an officer-involved shooting at a Summerlin Costco last month that left a Las Vegas man dead.

The recording originally was posted on radioreference.com, which broadcasts live public safety audio feeds and archives law enforcement radio recordings. Portions of the audio also have been posted to YouTube.

A little dated, but some more info on the Costco shooting.

Metro Police spokesman Bill Cassell said Monday that police haven’t authenticated the audio, but he said he has listened to a portion of the recording.

"The recordings speak for themselves," he said. "When you listen to the recording, it demonstrates the calmness and professionalism of how the situation was handled."

Well that settles it. No investigation needed.

I’m impressed on how quickly they were able to release the video. It only took 30-some days.

So... they calmly and professionally shot and killed him?

Is that what gets the pass these day?

OK, just remember, when you shoot back, do so calmly and professionally...

They sure did "handle" the situation, didn't they.

well, that couldn’t have been recorded after the fact and released, what, 30 days after the incident, now could it?

“In the recording, a police dispatcher says a man, later identified as 38-year-old Erik Scott, is acting erratically while throwing store merchandise and is possibly high on drugs in the Summerlin Costco, 801 South Pavilion Center Drive. “

If he had a gun and was shooting it, then the police did the right thing. That is what they are trained for.

His gun was never out of it’s holster. He was a West Point Grad and had a CCW which got Costco’s knickers in a knot. They don’t allow legal carry but have no signs posted.

That is a big IF...

The tapes only talk about the few minutes before the shooting. I want to hear the 911 call FROM THE BEGINNING and SEE the videos backing those slanderous accusations FIRST.

Then we will see.

There is a reason that has NOT happened. It may NEVER happen.

they won’t be,

because they show that the cops murdered this man.

There were immediately excuses about the video. 4 cameras and none worked right? Anyone the tapes were sent to a California forensics lab. Supposedly.

That is why I qualified it with “If”. I don’t think that the tapes should be witheld, if the police shot the guy and the gun was holstered then the officer who shot him should be fired and charged with something. If the guy was violent and he was “going for his gun” and the video clearly shows that or hints at that then the officer made the right call. I just hope the full video is released.

I read somewhere that there was some kind of “technical difficulty” with the hard drive the videos were on. I’m curious if anyone saw those videos and then mysteriously died or disappeared. If you worked in the lab, or computer shop, or wherever this hard drive was sent, could you resist the temptation to burn a copy?

3 cops shot him. Twice in the chest and 5 shots in the back. Over 40 witnesses and only 12 back parts of the cops scenario.

If the guy was violent and he was “going for his gun”

There are witnesses standing 5 to 8 feet from Scott and they said the cops gave conflicting commands and Scott never went for his gun.

No cop has been found guilty of misconduct in Las Vegas since 1976.

“There were immediately excuses about the video. 4 cameras and none worked right? Anyone the tapes were sent to a California forensics lab. Supposedly. “

I think there needs to be protection for the surveilence videos when they are given to the cop, something like the cops have to make a blind copy of it before even looking at it and give the copy back to the client before they even get to look at it. If Costco still had the tape they should be able to share it with whomever they want. Now the tape may be “lost” for the convienience of the police involved.

It sucks that media like this cannot be protected and at least have a copy remain in the hands of private businesses or individuals.

If I had a store and a security system like this you can bet you biddy i would have a backup system that would keep the last 100+ hours of footage on a hard drive that was hidden really well along with the rest of the contemporary recording equipment in case something like this happened or even in the case of recording failure. I guess I am paranoid about retaining data.

Costco doesn't want those tapes made public. The story they told the police doesn't match witness accounts.

If it were me, I would have, Burned a copy to DVD, Copied it to my MP3 player, given several copies to my friends with instructions should anything happen to me to mail it in to the local news stations, and also instructions for my more tech saavy friends to get it on the “torrents” of the WWW.

But I have problems with HOW this came to the police attention to the point they arrived with guns drawn and HAD TO HAVE THE VICTUM POINTED OUT TO THEM.

How could this guy been ‘violent’ if they couldn’t tell as he exited with the crowd????? What DID that Costco employee say? And why have we NOT seen the video of him in the aisle being violent?? Maybe because he WASN’T?

Oh and I would park several blocks away from the pawn shop, wear gloves, wear a disguise, and when i used the laptop I would re-configure the MAC on the wireless card. And the cash would be cash that I aquirred by collecting change from fast food restaraunts over a period of several months and wearing gloves while receiving the change and putting into my coat pocket lined with a zip lock bag.

Ok, might be a little too careful here.

The first articles from when it happened were posted on FR along with eye witness statements. They gunned down the guy. With his fiancee right there. He was trying aluminum bottles in his backpack to see if they fit. That was the "destroying property" part. He bought the bottles. He also had a legal gun. Costco didn't like that so they said he was destroying merchandise and had a gun to expedite police arrival.

Nevada freepers have stated that Las Vegas is VERY corrupt.

There is still the question on the Costco security tapes.

Yes on the tape an officer said a gun was pointed at him, but if they went in thinking someone was waving a gun around then anything can look like a gun (remember the guy in NY that was gunned down for pointing his wallet).

The real problem is that no matter how professional the police were, if the Costco employee gave them embellished information on the initial call than Costco can, and should, still be liable for wrongful death.

This is exactly why it is BS for cops to take your cameras away from you when you are filming them. A person has a G-damned right to any photons comming within at least 3 feet around them comming from any distance, also any sound waves in the vicinity of their ear drums as well and the right to record anything their eyes and ears are seeing and hearing. A person has a RIGHT to their memories, even if part of those memories are recorded on an external memory device, be it a tape recorder or a video recording device they are holding or are on their person.

There was a transcript of the 911 call on a FR thread several weeks ago. The cops, based on the Costco employee’s description (”berserk, gun, tearing up the store...”) were loaded for bear. I imagine all sorts of images are running through their heads as they race to the store.

There was radio traffic on setting up a command post in a parking lot across the street, etc. So - these cops were paranoid and on high alert.

However, if the situation seemed so huge (command centers, etc.) - why were there only four cops at the exit of the store. And one would think that their observations of the actual events would have given them the REAL information that this guy was not a threat real quick. A Costco employee had to point out the guy to the cops as he calmly filed out with all the other customers evacuating the building.

Idiot cops. Idiot liberal imployee. And an innocent, and upstanding citizen, is gunned down in cold blood. The Costco employee, and the cops, should be held responsible. Too bad the 4 video tapes outside the store, and the one on the aisle where the guy was trying out the bottles and the backpack will be found to have problems after they create them. Hopefully the one Costco employee that was reported to have help load the water bottles back into his cart and get him on his way to the check-out will be honest and brave and come forward.

Out of over 40 witnesses, no one said he pointed a gun at police. Early police statements said his gun was still in it's zippered holster. I have read all that's available on this.

It seems that there are too many here on FR who automatically blame the Police.

Las Vegas is one of the most corrupt places in the country. NO cop has been found guilty of misconduct since 1976. And they kill a LOT of unarmed people. With witnesses present. They all claim "furtive movements". With their hands up? You need to read more about Las Vegas.

As if there is no crime or crazy people in this perfect world.

Not in this case.

CCW, not shooting it. 71 seconds from first police contact to 7 police bullets & a Taser - 5 bullets in the back as he was lying on the ground. Basically executed for p*ssing off a Costco employee.

BTW - the police were shouting different commands, and Erik Scott flunked the pop multiple choice quiz.

Exactly. If you're going to go to the trouble to have a system with multiple cameras, go to the slight additional trouble to mirror it all over to another site that only you know about. They can seize or subpoena the one. They can't get the other unless you want to reveal its existence.
