Aspecter is haunting Russia today. It is not the specter of Communism—that ghost has been chained in the attic of the past—but rather of depopulation—a relentless, unremitting, and perhaps unstoppable depopulation. The mass deaths associated with the Communist era may be history, but another sort of mass death may have only just begun, as Russians practice what amounts to an ethnic self-cleansing.
Since 1992, Russia’s human numbers have been progressively dwindling. This slow motion process now taking place in the country carries with it grim and potentially disastrous implications that threaten to recast the contours of life and society in Russia, to diminish the prospects for Russian economic development, and to affect Russia’s potential influence on the world stage in the years ahead.

What a complete failure of an article.
Spend pages of text discussing the decline of population in Russia, even discussing “fertility rates”, yet not one mention of Russia having the highest abortion per woman of child bearing age of all countries in the world.
There’s your explanation, they’re killing themselves off.
There are a lot of Russian girls marrying foreigners and leaving Russia. It seems that communism in the end destroyed the Russian male and the family. The smart girls look for a way out. Same with the former East Germany. Lots of those girls seem to leave Germany and move abroad. Having three single sons..you observe a few things.

Abortion is the Culture of Death, not vodka. High birth rate Muslims are replacing non-Muslims in the former Soviet Union. They are planning to take over all of Europe and the Europeans don’t seem to be interested in resisting.

The younger folks were brought up without religion and now their children are not having kids and living without religion.

Good points. I sometimes try to imagine European and/or Russian life in 20-50 years, and it is bleak in my visions. If it’s not liberalism, it is Islam and the Chinese. Much to NOT look forward to. While Russia is not a friend of the US, a Muslim Russia would be immeasurably worse.

Quite right. Europe too is going through a similar “depopulation” as Russia, only not as fast (so is China, for that matter). The U.S. is one of the few industrialized countries whose workforce is expected to grow over the next 50 years.
Actually, some parts of Europe are depopulating even faster than Russia. In America Alone, Mark Steyn calculated that the native population of Spain would halve in twenty years. And that was written in 2006!
Of course that is due to the Mexican Invasion. The USA will not be the same nation then, if it even still exists, which I doubt.
Regrettably, part of the future depopulation of the Eastern European mothership of tyranny is the abortion rate that is encouraged by the dismal life there under Putin's stooges.
Also to be regretted is the fact that the first beneficiary of Russian collapse will be Red China which has more population than can be accommodated within its borders and a real desire for the mineral riches of Siberia.
Saving Mother Russia from its evils is also no priority for the USA not even when its leaders are falsely described as Christian (while being veteran operatives of the utterly atheist former USSR).

After multiple abortions, which are quite common in Russia, many women are infertile.
Impolite as it may be to mention, the Russians, men and women, are horrible drunkards. Liter a week? Nonsense. On a recent business trip our drivers did a liter of vodka, or more, per day! The discarded bottles actually crunch underfoot, piling up everywhere like water bottles in one of our picnic areas.
Proper use of vodka will increase population, not decrease it.
