DETROIT — After a dismal period of huge losses and deep cuts that culminated in the Obama administration’s bailout of General Motors and Chrysler, the gloom over the American auto industry is starting to lift.

New York Times is opening a bureau in Detroit in order to train reporters and editors for overseas deployment.

I'm SURE that Detroit is booming. Must be all the advertising they do for "Michigan being business friendly". hahahahaha

Geez. Somebody drank the Kool-Aid - no mention in the article of the tens of billions of taxpayer dollars sunk into GM and Chrysler (plus GMAC). I bet any industry wouldn’t be feeling quite as gloomy once it got an unlimited supply of slop at the federal trough. NYT is cranking up the propaganda machine heading into the fall elections - looks like everyone has gotten the message to tell the country that the economy is great. Pay no attention to those gloomy numbers!

Right now Detroit is doing well because they are selling some great cars. The best cars they’ve ever made. However these cars were all designed pre-Obama. Starting with the Volt, which was designed pre-Obama but which he has adopted and made his own, Detroit will try to trick us into buying substandard “green” cars. The only hope is Ford, but I think Obama will use the Unions to try to crush them when their next contract comes up. The seeds of the destruction of the US auto industry have already been sown.

It absolutely sounds like a Renaissance to me.

Maybe they’ll build a Renaissance Center to attract the green businesses with manufacturing facilities built on the barren residential properties swept clean by the blight.

I can foresee great happenings now that the dark age is over

I read in Automotive News that 25% of all GM vehicles and 33% of all Chrysler vehicles sold went into daily fleet rentals in 2010 (meaning they just about gave them away).

I live in the Detroit area and things are hardly booming here.

Did they mention how GM paid back it's DEBT with MORE BAILOUT MONEY? I couldn't believe the head of GM had the brass ones to infer that REVENUE was the pay back mechanism. It's all lies. The NYT is a shill, as always for Obama with the usual extreme LIES.

Press release when Bill Vlasic joined the NY Times:

I’m pleased to announce that Bill Vlasic will be the Times’ new Detroit bureau chief, taking over from Micki Maynard, who will be moving on to a new assignment in Washington next year.

Micki is hard to replace, with her knack for seeing around corners, and for writing smart and bright enterprise that tends to walk onto Page One. But we’re confident Bill can continue the Times’ tradition of first-rate coverage out of the nation’s automotive capital.

With more than a dozen years’ experience covering the industry, most recently for the Detroit News, Bill knows the business inside-out. Detroit is a company story, a consumer story, a labor story, an environmental story and a political story, and Bill has demonstrated an ability to approach the beat from all these angles.

He won a Loeb Award in 2005 for a series on safety problems with car roofs, and was a Loeb finalist in three other years. And he wrote a gripping series on Heinz Prechter’s battle with manic depression, and how it drove the prominent auto executive to take his own life.

His book, “Taken for a Ride,” about Daimler Benz’s buyout of Chrysler, which he wrote with Brad Stertz, was lauded by our own Keith Bradsher in the Times’ Book Review. He likened it to “Barbarians at the Gate...a spellbinding tale, juicy gossip and all, of how business is really done among the world’s largest companies.”

Bill is a Detroit native and the father of two sons, ages 24 and 21, and a 16-year-old daughter. Please welcome him when he arrives in New York for orientation in the next few weeks.

My hometown Cleveland, is not as bad, but it won’t take long to follow Detroit. We’ve kept our neighborhoods, for the most part.

If it weren’t for the magnificent Cleveland Clinic, always expanding, taking up whole blocks of the city, we would be in deep shit.

Although Obamacare might take a bite out of that.

I’m in the defense industry. Every new Request for Quote (RFQ) says right on the coversheet: “The winner or this proposal WILL produce it in Detroit.” This has created a bizarre bit of economics in Detroit. Nobody working for a company based anywhere else wants to relocate to Detroit. So, engineers already working in Detroit are jumping companies for more pay like fish jumping to escape a shark. The local engineer’s pay is out of proportion to the rest of the real world.

If you’re moving there from someplace else, you have to make enough money to send your kids away to school. You’d be insane to let them attend public school. Yes, I know there are nice areas in Sterling Heights and others locations, but the cost of living there must be shooting through the roof and it will only get worse.

Meanwhile, the taxpayer will pay the additional cost of these companies moving to Detroit to help Obama’s co-conspirators in crime; the UAW.

I wonder how the FedGov purchases factor in? A certain governmentally-funded entity I am quite familiar with was making do with older vehicles until the last couple of months, when they got shiny new Dodges which heretofore were too expensive. I refer to the lot as "Obamobiles."

At best a relative, temporary “boom” as GM busily builds heavily government subsidized cars which no one’s gonna buy. Then billions and billions and tens of billions more thrown into the hole as (contra Edsel Ford) “The Won” refuses to admit error. Detroit will continue in it's death spiral. The death will just be slower and more painful as the blood of the productive parts of the American economy are transfused into the corpse.
