Obama urges tourism to aid Gulf economy post-spill
14 August 2010 Last updated at 16:01 ET

President Obama has urged Americans to "come on down and visit" Florida to help revive the economy stricken by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Mr Obama said oil was no longer flowing into the Gulf but "our job is not finished and we are not going anywhere until it is."

The president is visiting Florida with his wife and elder daughter.

On Friday, US incident commander Adm Thad Allen said work would continue to seal the leaking well for good.

The president paid tribute to the US Coast Guard and others who had "toiled day and night" to plug the leak.

'Clean, open, safe'

He urged Americans to take their holidays in Florida, saying: "As a result of the clean-up effort, the beaches are clean, open and safe."

Tourism is one of the mainstays of the Florida economy. This year, however, much of the coastline is deserted, says the BBC's Andy Gallacher in Miami.

Obama urges tourism to aid Gulf economy post-spill...

Lets get real here: Its not the Gulf economy he wants to help, its more the Golf economy he has in mind.

He declared the gulf clean from an area not impacted by the spill. IMO, he didn't want to face the folks whose lives and livelihoods were destroyed by his administrations failure to act quickly to contain the spill. Big chicken.

I can remember how the liberals and the MSM mocked and laughed at President Bush when President Bush told the people to go out and go shopping and help keep the economy going after 9/11 .....

Did Oblamer take a private meeting with the politically and sexually confused Charlie Crist in a Mens Only Bathhouse during his brief visit? Oblamer’s “body man” Reggie Love should have been able to arrange a tension reliever for the overwrought POTUS.

Obie's current reading interest...

The Survivors Club
Synopsis...
According to Sherwood, two questions are central to this book. What does it really take to survive a catastrophic event and what kind of survivor are you? You might be surprised at the answers. While there are tactics and strategies to surviving life tragedies, unforeseen accidents, and other catastrophes, many of these are instinctive (some, like exhibiting transitory superhuman strength, are manifested physiologically, without conscious planning). Some of us, Sherwood explains, are better survivors than others—in prisoner-of-war camps, for example, the people most likely to collapse are the eternal optimists who believe rescue is imminent and fail to come to terms with the possibility of long-term imprisonment. The book is a useful, insightful exploration of the nature of survival, the resilience of the human mind and body, and the ways in which we can all use our natural gifts to maximize our chances of coming through catastrophic situations. --David Pitt

Will he also tout Martha’s Vineyard to us little people as well? After all, one day in the Gulf, ten in the Vineyard?

He might sound more believable if he’d spent more than 27 hours on the Rednick Riviera.

LOL! I'm using a 'foreign' keyboard. I spilled milk in my big honking ergonomic keyboard when I was eating cereal the other day, and musta fried it, so I had to borrow an old one from our son. This is the old school kind, and I'm not used to my fingers being all squished together!

That's my story, and I'm stickin to it! ;o)

Obama has the interesting job of simultaneously convincing tourists that it is okay to come back to the Gulf region while also claiming that we can't drill because another well can blow at any minute.

President Obama has urged Americans to "come on down and visit" Florida to help revive the economy stricken by the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

It would have been a lot more useful if he had done his "encouraging" at the beginning of the summer. Now it is time for kids to go back to school and most people have already taken their vacation (or just stayed home).

Now I'm laughing, your big butt comment reminds me of:

The end of the Shrek movies....after the credits (I hope you saw them)? They do this sing along....

Donkey (Eddie Murphy) does this rap while the dragon turns around and shakes it......

"I like big butts, and I don't lie."

Hysterical. Moochelle could be the dragon......

I didn’t see the movie, but we collected the glasses when we were driving through TX and LOE in May... then we found out the Sharky had added lead paint to poison the snake, and had to take the glasses back. Anyway, so I know what you’re talking about because all the characters were on the glasses...

She’s a disgusting moocher, talk about jiggling jello rolls.... Dragon Lady is even too nice for her! lol
