Authorities say the former Boston University medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist is dead from an apparent jailhouse suicide in Boston.
Ed Geary, a spokesman for the Suffolk County sheriff's office, says Philip Markoff was declared dead by emergency medical workers at about 10:15 Sunday morning. The body was found in the Nashua Street Jail.
"Sad to say, it's very true. It's shocking and very saddening," Markoff's defense attorney John Salsberg told the BostonHerald.com.

I think the lawyer is "sad" because he didn't get his 15 minutes of fame and constant cover by Nancy Grace.
I wish more inmates would take this guy’s cue.
Sorry Mr. Salsburg, but I’m neither shocked nor sad.
Luckily the bum is dead because you know they would never give this piece of trash three square meals a day, he'd get free internet, free tv, all on our dime.
Thanks you POS you just saved taxpayers a lot of money! And saved us from a psycho lawyer straight from hell.
Earning power compliments of the killer......GONE GONE GONE
He's shocked and saddened because he wont' be able to appear on Nancy Grace every night.
I feel just awful about that I tell ya, devastated is the word, just saddened and I feel bad too!!
Great news,We have another empty cell.
I am guessing that the rich boy didn’t enjoy being violated multiple times in the shower. I hope that the thugs in the prison made his life a living hell, and I hope he brought his sun tan lotion to hell with him.
Sad? Who’s sad?.
I could understand unhappy, but sad?
It was a bizzare case. He lured out of town prostitutes into Boston with an offer of paying them big bucks for services. He had them (!) check into and pay for swank hotels where he met and robbed them. He “only” killed one woman, from New York, who resisted. Some of the woman who pimp themselves on Craig’s List must obviously be desparate for money and she was one. In one case he had a Vegas hooker meet him in Rhode Island, where he attempted to rob her. Luckily for her, she brought her boyfriend/pimp along and he broke up the robbery.
The asshate pissed away the money he robbed in Foxwoods.
A sad end to a once promising life. Why did someone who had everything going for them turn into an evil lowlife killer? I guess now we’ll never find out.
By the way, prisons do not exist to punish criminals with homosexual rape, in spite of the many peculiar posters on this website that think that is their main function.
Oh the inhunanity!
Where is the ACLU? Aren’t they going to demand an investigation?
Sad??? Well, I’m sure all the women who had proposed marriage to him are sad.
It’s our fault really.
You know....none of what he did HAD to happen, if we’d only tolerate ____________ [fill in the blank].
A promising life gone to waste.
...and all that crap.
A murderer commits suicide? Why is that “so sad”?
Two robberies, one murder.
I’m actually pretty shocked. These types are normally monsters of ego who value their own lives over anything else.
My favorite line in these situations is: “He was just beginning to turn his life around.”
He turned it around all right.
Oh, well. Good riddance to bad rubbish. Thanks for saving the taxpayers millions of dollars on a three-ring circus of a trial.
Again with the disordered and irrational slant of the press and the elite that drives it. Nobody gives a eff that the monster is dead, including his phony-ass council.
Really, devere, a sad end? More like the best thing that could have happened once the thrill killer chose his life of evil. Why do people elevate such blots on humanity to persons once-promising? It is, in itself, disordered, irrational, and accessory to evil.
He was as you say, an ego out of hand, an example of “rudra”.
The problem likely was that he was being biatch slapped nightly by a 300 pound gorilla who made him his tenderloin.
Thats just the way prison is.
He surely pished off some of the prison administrators IMHO.
Authorities say the former Boston University medical student accused of killing a masseuse he met through Craigslist is dead from an apparent jailhouse suicide in Boston.Maybe he read how Al Gore is off the hook.
His mouthpiece is SADDENED?? Well sure...it cost him money and face time on CNN!!!
I’m happy and pleased.
But now we will never know if he was really guilty. Oh well....
“I think the lawyer is “sad” because he didn’t get PAID”
There. Fixed it!/s;)
Why do I have a strange feeling that Bernard Madoff is next?
These softies can’t do hard time when they do the crime.
Free ads, no slimy adult hookup section, and you can use your Youtube videos etc. AND, they have a plan to give away amazing travel, etc.
“Really, devere, a sad end? More like the best thing that could have happened once the thrill killer chose his life of evil.”
People do sometimes partially redeem themselves, even during a life in prison. Nathan Leopold comes to mind. And of course we are unfortunately quite aware of criminals at the highest levels of government who will never be punished. I have nothing against the death penalty for murderers, if we are certain of their guilt. But once society decides on life in prison as the penalty, we owe it to OURSELVES to behave in a civilized manner. I’m not clear on whether the savage attitude toward prison inmates often expressed on this website is due to an understandable frustration with crime, or just a more general desire to express hatred toward any socially acceptable target.
Philip Markoff certainly deserved the misfortune he brought upon himself. I do sympathize with his parents and former fiancee. Perhaps the finality of his death is the least painful outcome for them.
The giveaway plan...
There are few things that offer less possibility of doubt than that the murderer’s family are, indeed, better off.
Moral relativism never made anything better and I’m thankful it can be profoundly ill-at-ease here.
The Free Republic forum isn’t great all the time. It’s just great more often than anywhere else on the web. Some posters can be absolutist and harsh but they hardly define the culture here. Civility is uppermost with most.
“Why do I have a strange feeling that Bernard Madoff is next?”
John Salvi “offed” himself out there in Mass back in 96
I agree with you. Also a common statement is, "may he burn in hell". When I see that statement, I always click on the screen name of the commenter, to see if they describe themselves as Christians, many do and it is a most unChristian sentiment.
“Im not clear on whether the savage attitude toward prison inmates often expressed on this website is due to an understandable frustration with crime, or just a more general desire to express hatred toward any socially acceptable target.”
I’m quite certain it’s the former. Generally it’s liberals who publicly express vitriol when they think the target is on “the safe list” - watch SNL and you’ll see what I mean.
He really did turn his life around. 100% guarantee he won’t be doing no more bad stuff ever again.
Heh...what a hell of a way to go. Used a ball point pen to put a hole in his femoral artery and jugular in the neck. Damn hard way to go. You don’t do that to yourself unless you are on drugs, or the demons have ahold of you.
