DeLay Won't Face Charges as Justice Department Ends Probe

WASHINGTON—A lawyer for Tom DeLay said Monday that the Justice Department has ended an investigation of the former congressman and won't file criminal charges.

One of Mr. DeLay's lawyers, Richard Cullen, said the Justice Department's Office of Public Integrity informed Mr. DeLay's legal team early last week that it was ending the investigation.

Justice Department spokeswoman Laura Sweeney declined to comment, which is normally the case when the department ends a criminal probe without filing charges.

Ending the investigation, but not saying that they’ll never re-open it.

So is the No-Justice Department going to compensate Tom Delay for his legal bills?

Not even a libtard controlled DOJ had the cajones to prosecute such politically driven trumped up charges. The idiot in Texas that brought this whole thing into motion should pay a dear political price.

I wonder if Delay might sue for libel and defamation.

You would be referring to Ronnie Earle, DA of Travis County (Austin). The environmental capital of the western hemisphere voters are not gonna throw his derriere out.

If the current Justice Department had anything, they would have filed. They kept it open so long in hopes that something/somebody would come forward with something they could file on. But nothing ever came so they got zilch except for successfully intimidating the greatest whip the GOP ever had, a rare ‘smart’ Republican.

I had hoped years ago that Tom would stay in office while he dispensed with all these false and unfounded allegations, but now I see that he had to step out. While he held power, there would be those who would try and shake him down, to take advantage of his vulnerability. By stepping out, he removed himself as a target from those who think nothing more than “What’s in it for me?”.

This is just the Fed investigation. The Texas investigation is still ongoing for state violations......

From another article:

A state case continues in Texas, with a hearing scheduled for Aug. 24. A trial is expected next spring, and could last several weeks.

That’s too bad.

Then Delay should at least challenge him to a duel.

Swords or pistols?

Earle resigned or didn’t run for election in 2008. He ran for the Dem primary nod of Lt. Gov this year and lost to Linda Chavez-Thompson.

Why then did he leave office?

Because the justice system is designed to be so astronomically expensive that it is financially prohibitive to fight them.

Except for people like you, of course, who would spend your last dime and go hundreds of thousands of dollars into debt on principle, right?

As I recall it, the republicans had a rule that anyone who was under indictment had to step down from any leadership posts. Earle indicted him and DeLay gave up his post. Later he dropped his re-election bid which had certainly been affected by the charges brought by Earle and the DoJ investigation..

I don’t think that he is capable or willing.

The one in-depth interview I heard (with Rush), revealed him to be completely intimidated by, and actually admiring of, the criminal political scum known as the Clintons.

This whole thing was concocted for getting Delay out of office. If I remember correctly Delay gave money to support directly another Republican running for office. It was questionable but not illegal. But it provided a good excuse to remove him from office.
(If this isn't correct, it's close)

He had become a lightning rod for the Democrats claiming a Republic “culture of corruption”, even though the charges against him seemed risible on their face, unlike charges one could bring against Rangel, Waters, Geitner, ....

Yes you are right. But Delay I believe could have made a temporary step down while he filed to have the charges dismissed and still remained a representative in the meantime.

I tend to think he was smart enough to realize that by staying in Congress he would have attracted the full court press of media and DNC operatives. So he opted to get out.

In any event, I hope he gets back in Congress. His strategic and tactical mastery of partisan politics is sorely needed ny conservatives.

Didn’t hear about that; guess I was asleep at the switch. Don’t follow Austin politics that much here in SE TX. Good to be rid of him, but Chavez is the wife of the ex (deceased) San Antonio Transit System Union president, so in the scheme of things, she is no better.

In her case I don’t suspect she’ll be elected to the Lt. Gov. position this November. I just don’t see White and the democrats winning the top spots in Texas this time. What long range trends will be is something else with all the influx of both illegals and others into Texas.

Agreed. But I’m not fond of Dewhurst, a sleazy pol along the lines of Perry. He stopped the appraisal cap. He’s waiting for Kay, John, or Rick to step aside so he can step up. I won’t be supporting him against any other conservative.

As for Gov. Goodhair, he’s a useless phony, just less of one than Mayor Sanctuary. When he said TX doesn’t need a law like AZ, that proved his 10th amendment BS was just that - BS. Laugh if you will, but I supported Medina.

You are sure right about that!

But - Unfortunately his enemies knew that also - and decided to milk him for everything they could. He was somewhat like Sarah who stirs up so much hatred and is always being attacked.

But Delay rightly earned his nickname: The Hammer! He got things done and pushed through agendas and bills for conservatives.

Which Also why libs hate him!
