'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' Discharges Hit Lesbians Hardest

WASHINGTON (Aug. 16) -- The military is throwing out women disproportionately under its "don't ask, don't tell" policy, even as the number of service members discharged for being gay reached a new low last year.

According to Pentagon statistics released by the Palm Center at the University of California, Santa Barbara, 428 service members were discharged in 2009 under the policy that President Barack Obama has vowed to end. That's the lowest number since the policy began in 1994 and continues a steady decline that began after the 9/11 attacks.

More than 13,500 gays and lesbians have been discharged since the policy began. In 2001, the peak year for discharges, 1,273 were removed from the military for being gay.

As in past years, the policy affected women in greater numbers than men:

Army: Lesbians accounted for 48 percent of 195 discharges under the don't-ask, don't-tell policy, even though women make up only 14 percent of the force. That's up from 2008, when women represented 36 percent of Army discharges under the policy.

Air Force: More than half, 51 percent, of those discharged were women, who make up 20 percent of the service.

Marines: Nearly one in four, or 23 percent, of discharges under the policy were women, who make up just 6 percent of the Marines. That's up from 18 percent the year before.

Navy: The sea service discharged 22 women, or 27 percent of the total ousted for being gay. Women comprise 14 percent of naval personnel.

The data also showed that in the midst of two wars, the military continued to discharge highly trained service members in mission-critical areas. Among those ousted for being gay: seven combat engineers, eight linguists, 20 infantrymen and 16 medical aides.

"These data show, yet again, that 'don't ask, don't tell' undermines national security," said Aaron Belkin, director of the Palm Center, a gay-rights advocacy group that focuses on military issues. "Why are we firing linguists and infantrymen in the middle of two wars?"

The statistics were released a day after the deadline for service members to return surveys on the Pentagon policy. Despite sending out 400,000 questionnaires, just over one in four were returned. The results will be considered by a Pentagon working group that will report its recommendations on how to lift the policy no later than Dec. 1.

Boo-Hoo-hoo. I am not free to verbalize my sexual desires on the job due to sexual harrassment laws, why cant they accept this as a condition of employment when they join the military.

They are being discharged for their actions, for communicating their desires not for having them.

Among the other ways to read the data, are that lesbians join the service at a higher percentage of their gender then male homosexuals, or that they just can’t shut up about being homosexual where the men are more successful at staying in the closet.

service members discharged for being gay

I don't think they were discharged for being gay.

I'd bet they were discharged for talking about it.

If these lesbians were not so much in-your-face about their lifestyle CHOICE they would NEVER be thrown out. They simply do it thinking that it will not happen and that the atmosphere, created by the leftist scum of our political leadership, will sustain them. They DEMAND that we accommodate them in the face of existing law.

I wan them all thrown out when they do this.

This article also does not address how many of these people intentionally let their sexualorientation be know in order to get out of the service without completing their contract. Back when I was in, a person could get out fairly quickly by saying they were gay.

How many use it as an excuse for a discharge?

I have no problem with gays and lesbians serving as long as they keep the sex out of the barracks and certain aspects of their behavior at bay when they are serving.

There should be no sex in the barracks or sexual activities and that includes everyone in the service.

Your answer is obviously the truth. Lesbians are more likely to be ‘butch’ and gays are ‘fairies’. Butch more likely to be able to fight.

“The military is a macho environment that appeals more to straight men and lesbians.”

My thoughts, too.
I’ve was in the military 28 years and I never heard of a homosexual being kicked out for talking... but because of doing...
- Lesbian who cut her wrists got the notice she wanted, only then did the women in her baracks say she was rubbing her breasts against them, etc; the other women were putting up with it rather than reporting it
- Homosexual who knowingly transmitted AIDS to another homosexual got arrested for this illegal activity, got noticed, and not in a way he wanted
- Wikileaks leaker, a homosexual, mad at the miliatary’s homosexual policy, wanted to hurt the military

I wonder if anybody is keeping statistics of how often this happens just after unit deployment to Iraq/Afghanistan is announced?

When I was overseas my entire company would have claimed to be gay if we thought it would get us back to the World.

Of course, if we'd had to prove it we'd have grumbled and gone back to work.

We had a black guy who dressed up in a wig and women's clothes when he was off duty. This was way before Cpl Klinger on MASH.

One day the CO got us together and asked us whether we felt comfortable with a cross-dresser in the barracks. Everyone to a man said that it was just wrong. When the CO asked for specifics everybody pointed out that his makeup was horrible and that he was using too much foundation and his lipstick clashed with his eyes and skin tone. Then it was pointed out that he was just awful at accessorizing... he'd wear poka dot dresses with plaid handbags.

Then there was a heated argument, which I think was about whether heels or pumps were appropriate for evening wear. At some point the CO just walked off shaking his head.

Draftees, God bless ‘em. The CO was a draftee too.

“In 2001, the peak year for discharges, 1,273 were removed from the military for being gay.”

Wrong: they were discharged for engaging in homosexual conduct or making homosexual statements. Not for “being gay”.

and “the Palm Center”? If these guys would keep in “in the palm”, they wouldn’t be getting discharged.

Sorry. Just had to say it.

Talked to a friend who was posted on a base in Iraq. He said eryone knew who was gay or lesbian, but it was not normally an issue. BUT, some of the lesbian women would really give straight women the eyeball in the showers, making the straight women quite uncomfortable. Heard some even talked about what they saw to some men. Very weird and just wrong. Maybe straight women are less likely to beat the snot out of a creepy woman, than straight guys, so maybe intimidation is more of a problem with women?

RE :”I have no problem with gays and lesbians serving as long as they keep the sex out of the barracks and certain aspects of their behavior at bay when they are serving

What about Don't Ask ? Isn't this just about them claiming that promoting their alternative sexuality is right? Like it's the First Amendment? And that restricting their ability to communicate their sexuality to find partners is a violation of that right to express themselves in the military?

They really want to marry the same sex in the military. That is where this is going.

I bet most hetro-sexual women couldnt care less if a lesbo is in the shower with them. Just my guess. (I live in a liberal state.) I bet it is much less popular with men in the military than women.

Those are very sexist comments. The military will have new sexuality sensitivity training to make sure hetro-sexual men do not make sexist comments like those.

I wonder too how many were discharged because they wanted to be? After all, if one doesn’t like military life, all one has to do is say “I’m gay” and you’ll be sent out. It also sounds like there’s an extraordinary number of gays/lesbians in the military versus their % in the population. 13,500 discharged in 10 years?!

Lesbians join the services in higher numbers than gay males.

Some gay men join the military who are attracted to things very masculine. Some guys struggling with sexual or gender issues join the military to be around more normal “manly men” men in the hope of learning to be a straight man, or just to “be a man”. But that’s a smaller percentage. Most gay or bisexual or otherwise queer men are going to avoid the military and pursue school or a civilian career.

The lesbians are also more aggressive towards straight women than the gay men would be (for sure straight women may put up with being hit upon by a lesbian but a straight guy won’t put up with being hit on by a gay male).

Also lesbians have lover’s spats, sometimes leading up to physical fights, and sometimes there is physical abuse in the relationship that would be called clearly Domestic Violence if it were a Man-Woman couple.

So I would say it is not surprising that the numbers of lesbians discharged from the military are higher even if they are a smaller percentage overall.percentage

What straight men have to realize, is that a lesbian woman who does this sort of thing is not doing them any favors and is definitely not on their side.

They are just trying to stir things up among the straight guys and gals and cause trouble between them by telling the guys what the straight women look like naked.

The straight guys have to tell the lesbians to STFU when they start talking about that sort of stuff, and walk away and not give them an audience.

The straight guys have to realize this: The straight women are their sisters. The lesbians are the enemies of and trying to make trouble for their straight sisters.

Doubt the guys told the tattle-tales off. Impression was the guys didn't show a reaction in the hopes the blabber mouth would go away.

I've read of TWO civilian assaults within the past year. One in the UK, one US. The more masculine partner in both cases was trying to force pregnancy on a partner. Turkey baster with someones sperm in the UK case and forced sex, IIRC, in the second. Can we all say, 'Ewwwwwww'! There needs to be some real honesty out there. Judging by these two cases [and I believe both were repeated efforts!] there is some serious abuse going on between same sex couples. But that does not fit the meme, so we only hear about hetro male against hetero female. And I really feel sorry for any hetro man getting abused by a woman. They're totally screwed. Probably be hard to bring a case.
