Canadian Cities Declare War on Cars

As a Country, Canada has generally been way ahead of the States when it comes to worrying about the planet.

Remember, they signed the Kyoto Treaty. Wind farms are popping up at a fierce pace (to the dismay of some residents). Toronto is so troubled about all the garbage and trash they create, they ship it all to the States (true fact).

And now we read where an assortment of Canadian cities are taking steps to force people out of their cars.

Montreal has identified 20 streets that "are not useful" and will be closed.

City planners are looking for ways to get cars out of neighborhoods, narrowing roads as well as planting trees in order to dissuade cars from entering.

The dream is to have these narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets where neighbors can walk, chat and teach their kids to ride a bike.

Fine. But in January?

Anyhow the beat goes on. Toronto recently took a main thoroughfare that had five lanes of traffic with the fifth lane going one way in the morning and the other in the afternoon and reworked it into a four lane with the other space going to bikes. Howls from motorists went unnoticed by the city fathers. Interestingly, there is increased friction between motorists and bike riders throughout Canada as more and more people pedal to work.

But in January?

And get this. A new high-rise condo building is going up in Toronto that has no parking spaces.

A whole building made and dedicated only to those who reject cars and bike, walk or wait forever for a bus.

But in January?

Does anyone pretend Canada does something earth-friendly by shipping their environmental waste to the U.S.? Oh, they're so green. Not.

The dream nightmare is to have these narrow, pedestrian-friendly streets where neighbors can walk run, chat holler for help, and teach their kids to ride a bike dodge bullets for exercise as they drag their groceries and granny home in a duffel bag through the deserted streets and neighborhoods.

People who own cars are denied some portion of their wages, by government confiscation through taxes (fuel taxes and other taxes and fees), and then some portion that which was confiscated is used by the government units that collected it to fund ventures to deny opportunities to drivers and promote and subsidize transportation modalities to others.

People with cars, EVERYWHERE, should start a revolution based on TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION and start refusing to pay their taxes to governmental units that mistakenly believe they ONLY represent people who do not drive cars.

They're doing the same thing in NYC. They just repaved a stretch of First Avenue, and basically cut it from 5 lanes down to 3 for vehicular traffic. One lane is now reserved exclusively for buses (they've been ticketing cabbies for using the bus lanes recently), and the other is now exclusively for bicycles. The really retarded thing about the whole exercise is that they have basically substantially increased the danger to bicyclists.

First, they moved the parking spaces on the left side of the avenue out to the second lane from the curb, and then turned the curb lane into a bike lane. That means that drivers who park will now be opening their doors into the bike lane - which happens even on the unmodified streets - but now the bicyclists won't have anywhere to go other than (a) threading the needle at high speed (some of them go quite fast) between the opened door and the curb, (b) hitting the door and going head over heels, or (c) hoping they can jump the curb onto the sidewalk without hitting anything or anyone (fat chance).

Second, the bicycle lane gives way to a left-turn lane for each street into which cars can turn from the avenue. Further, these turning lanes cut across two lanes, basically, because they have to go from the third lane from the curb, across the second lane, which is now for parking, and into the curb lane to make a turn. That means that a car that's trying to make a left turn will (a) be hidden from any bicyclists in the bicycle lane by the row of parked cars, until (b) it suddenly veers over, across two lanes, to get into the left-turn lane, a maneuver that will leave both cyclist and driver with precious little time to see each other and take evasive maneuvers to avoid a collision. Of course, the loser in that every single time is going to be the cyclist, not the car.

Finally, by putting in a dedicated cycle lane, they've made it much more dangerous for pedestrians because they do not enforce any of the traffic laws against cyclists (like stopping at a red light), which means that a lot of riders simply ignore red lights and keep on going without even slowing down if they know that there's no cross-traffic to deal with. Of course, that does not include pedestrians, who are a lot harder to see than cars and trucks, and who react very unpredictably when they realize they're about to get mown down by a speeding cycle. In those collisions, the pedestrian will almost always lose.

Oh well, at least it'll be a boon to the tort lawyers (although it's gonna boost city taxes even higher to pay for all of those new lawsuits from injured pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicle owners who've had their cars damaged).

How are they going to get trucks in to deliver stuff?

They called this the Pedestrian Mall back in the 1960’s. They destroyed hundreds of formerly thriving business districts by doing this (two of them within a few miles of where I sit). Those places turned into decaying, vacant wastelands and eventually they opened the streets back up to traffic.

But I guess Canadian Elites could never bring themselves to learn from OUR experience.

Oh man, you mean that's not a motorcycle lane? No wonder I keep getting such scornful looks.

BTW, that nonsense isn't just confined to Manhattan. They royally screwed up Kent Ave in Brooklyn with that nonsense for example. Used to be a convenient two way street; now it's one way with a motorc--I mean bicycle lane between the parking lane and curb. Such a pain now that I stopped frequenting Williamsburg establishments.

Hee-hee! Well, the picture on the lane does just show a two-wheeled vehicle with a rider wearing a helmet, so I don't see why you're not entitled to use those lanes!
