ABC Links Dan Quayle’s ‘Potatoe’ to His Son: ‘Dust off the Jokes and Hold on to Your Potatoes’
NewsBusters ^ | 8/16/10 | Brad Wilmouth

Saturday’s Good Morning America on ABC devoted a full report to former Vice President Dan Quayle’s son Ben’s run for Congress in Arizona, focusing primarily on perceived gaffes by both him and his father. As anchor John Berman set up the report, he gave the impression that he views the former Vice President primarily as a joke: "It's time to dust off the jokes and hold on to your potatoes. Who can forget the vice presidency of Dan Quayle? His mortal feud with TV's Murphy Brown. His battles with the dictionary. Well, now, one of his children wants to follow in his footsteps and is making some headlines of his own, not all intentional."

During the piece which recounted a number of activities and statements by Ben Quayle that have come under criticism, or have come across to some as gaffes, correspondent T.J. Winick played a clip of the time that Dan Quayle infamously told a school boy that the word "potato" should have an "e" added to the end during a spelling lesson at a school. Winnick did not inform viewers that it was the teacher who led Quayle astray as she had misspelled the word on the word list she had given to the then-Vice President to check the children’s spelling.

Winick also described what he called a "shocking ad" in which Ben Quayle labeled President Obama "the worst President in history," and promised to go to Washington and "knock the hell out of the place." The ABC correspondent also informed viewers that Quayle had been criticized for using a photograph of himself with his nieces in campaign literature because he has no children of his own.

He should ignore the monkeys and just keep pounding away. If he lets the newsies choose the subject matter, he’s lost. Keep pounding, and ignore them.

Anyone remember Biden’s story (during the debates) about how France and the US invaded Lebanon together? His stories about FDR’s televised fireside chats?

The ‘potatoe’ flap was so emblematic of the ruling elites. Who really cares if someone mispells the work. I have an MA in English and could easily have done the same thing. the elites are so desperate to have us believe that they are smarter than everyone else and are only succeeding in making us realize that ‘education’ is becoming an irrelevant quality in the absence of leadership.

He can't even copy his own writing correctly :}....in the prior bracket SYRACUSE is spelled correctly......probably a CRIB NOTE from Joe Biden who parleyed plagiarism into
Congress and the VICE President position..(no untoward comments please).

Winick probably would be "shocked" to learn water is wet, the Pope is Catholic, and bears crap in the woods.

So by their rationale, we can tie Ted Kennedy’s criminal actions to every one in that family who seeks office, yes?

I missed that. I love the other liberal brain trusts, such as former Surgeon General Jocelyn Elder's comment that we should make buckets that "don't hold water," and "safer bullets."

The recent one with the liberal brain trust believing that the island of Guam could be tipped over by adding more Marines.

WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED:

I was working at NBC right after the "Quayle Incident" and Letterman had the kid on his show who Quayle was spelling for in class. (The boy was on to further humiliate Quayle and keep the story going.) The boy was given a spelling card and he was supposed to correct another child if he spelled "potato" wrong. Instead the teacher gave it to Quayle so the VP could participate. Only it was spelled POTATOE on the card, which was wrong, but Quayle repeated it anyway, not wanting to go against the teacher.

The boy told the actual story to Letterman and said it wasn't Quayle's fault, but that part of kid's appearance was cut from all but the NY feed of the show. That's when I knew that Dave was not on our side and the media will never let this go.

Where did Soetoro get his education in 1965? That’s the real question.

These ruling East Coast elitists need to STFU.

A friend of mine in Indiana is working to get a book published, has no degree. He dealt with one publisher, some @$$hole in Boston and the guy was downright condescending. The publisher agent mentioned on why should he publish a book from a person who has no degree and lives in fly over territory ! These condescending people are the types that are making big decisions for our country and to tell the truth, they need to be fired and not allowed to manage this country ever again since they are doing such a $h!tty job ! They have absolutely no common sense.
