G.O.P. Seizes on Mosque Issue Ahead of Elections
New York Times ^ | August 17, 2010 | Carl Hulse

Posted on 08/17/2010 6:51:48 AM PDT by La Lydia

Republican Congressional candidates on Monday intensified efforts to inject the divide over construction of an Islamic center near ground zero into the midterm campaigns while the Senate’s top Democrat said he objected to the mosque being built there. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada...a Democrat facing a difficult re-election fight, said through a spokesman that those who plan to erect the Islamic center should look elsewhere. That separates Mr. Reid from President Obama’s support of the developers’ right to build the center....

Republicans said Mr. Obama’s defense of the right of the developers to pursue the project showed that he was out of touch with average Americans.

The remarks were a rare instance in this campaign season when Republicans have strayed from a focus on economic issues in their push for substantial gains in the House and Senate in November. The intensity of their attacks showed that they do not appear worried about the risk of being seen as intolerant or not supportive of the right to freedom of religion.

Some leading Democrats said it was the president’s role to stand up for constitutional rights in the mosque dispute.

Privately, many Democrats were not pleased that the issue had been thrown into their laps during the summer recess as they believed they had been making inroads by talking about how some Republicans support privatizing Social Security. But strategists said Democrats could counter the Republican offensive by labeling the mosque dispute as a local issue and saying Democrats remain focused on the economy.

Some also said the White House should not have put lawmakers on the spot in the first place and could have been better prepared for the president’s statement...Other Democrats said they did not see the fight resonating strongly outside New York ...

"Islamic center" not mosque. No issue to be seen here, folks, according to the NY Times. Just mean old Republicans doing what they always do. And note the use of the passive "was thrown into their laps," neatly avoiding mention of WHO BROUGHT UP THE SUBJECT TO BEGIN WITH AT A RAMADAN DINNER IN THE WHITE HOUSE. "Not resonating outside of New York..."!

Also implicit in their tone and the headline is that they don't actually have any ideological reasons for their opposition; nope they attribute it to political considerations entirely.

Yeah, try and make that one fly!

On Morning Joe the commies were bashing Republicans hard on this issue. Practically begging Republicans to turn back to the economy.

Which means that staying on this issue is exactly what Republicans should do.

There’s still plenty of time to focus on the economy, and the economy won’t magically heal before November. This mosque issue sets a tone. In a couple weeks Republicans should again focus on the economy, and let the message from this mosque debacle sink in with the voters.

All leftists, from BOTH major political parties and from EVERY political level, need to be asked about the mosque at Ground Zero-asap and often! Non-leftists candidates throughout the U.S. can, definitely, boost their chances for victory, while leftists continue to fall apart on, just, this issue.

I wonder if the rumored decision by the Muzzies to not build on the site was requested by O's minions to cool things down. They can always fire it up again later, after the elections.

STRAW MAN!. Nobody is challenging the constitutional right to build the mosque. They are challenging the propriety of it. As usual, the libs try to change the subject when they are cornered.

The NYT really thinks everyone is as stupid as they are.
