Glenn Beck's plans for rally on a hallowed date and spot spurs countermarches

Social activists and civil rights leaders, among them the Rev. Al Sharpton, are planning marches and demonstrations -- including the unveiling of a nearly four-story-tall original sculpture on the Mall -- on Aug. 28 to coincide with a rally organized by Fox News personality Glenn Beck.

Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally, with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin among the scheduled speakers, will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech there.

"There will be absolutely no politics involved," he said. "This rally will honor the troops, unite the American people under the principles of integrity and truth, and make a pledge to restore honor within ourselves and our country."

Civil rights leaders have denounced Beck's plans, questioning his motives for choosing the date and place, which they said are historically symbolic of the country's civil rights movement.

Watch for acts of provocation (violence?) from the peace-loving progressives.

Beck is walking them into a trap again. His event is non political but all the marxists are gathering to provide him with material enough to last a lifetime.

Ground Zero is "historically symbolic" to America, too. I have not heard a peep from these folks on that issue.

Beck is not attacking the memory of MLK's speech; he is honoring those who give to the great country.

Do they object to Restoring Honor, uniting the country or Honoring the Troops?

Or are they just hoping for a fight.

I guess all of the above...

PS - How the heck can they get a permit for this. As I understand it, the parks dept. is very careful not to allow counter protest rallies because of the potential of violence etc.

Beck is walking them into a trap again.

Right you are. How many US flags will be burned or walked upon is the only question. And count on La Raza to be there with Mexican flags unfurled. Great photo ops.

The date is irrelevant. That date isn't owned by anyone. This is America, and if Glenn Beck or anyone else wants to hold a rally on that day, especially one that provides a positive message as this one seems to be putting forth, then everyone else should shut their pieholes. If they don't like it, they don't have to attend or watch it.

King’s neice, Alveda King will actually speaking at the rally in DC. Jesse Jackson is relegated to Detroit with union thugs, marxists, and klan pink.

That’s exactly why I’m not going. I think the race pimps and their thugs will try to start something or try to pin something on us. I don’t want any part of it.

Thank you, WaPo and all you self-styled “civil rights leaders” for making up my mind for me about going to DC on 8-28 for GB’s massive reaffirmation of America’s bedrock principles.

I ... WILL ... BE ... THERE !

August 28, 2010 | 11:00 am | Dunbar High School | 1301 New Jersey Avenue Northwest | Washington, DC

47 years ago, the March on Washington took place where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his I Have a Dream speech at the March on Washington. 47 years later, Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network invites you to reclaim the dream. We’ve made progress but our struggle still continues. Please join us and register for the historic Reclaim the Dream Rally and March on Saturday, August 28th in Washington DC at Dunbar High School at 11 am. National Action Network will mobilize progressive leaders, clergy, activists and “Dream Keepers” for a mass rally. There are conservative groups and tea party members that are holding rallies the same day at the Lincoln Memorial and we want to show the world that THE DREAM LIVES ON.

Dunbar High School is 15 minutes away from the Lincoln Memorial.

Rallying on the Mall on August 28 is for liberal black people only, Glenn, didn’t you get the memo?

I’m not the world’s biggest Beck fan, and can’t make it up there that day, but I hope he draws a MASSIVE crowd. That date and that place belong to everyone, Revund Jackson, not just those of you from the 1960s.

The Park Service grants permits for counter-demonstrations. Even ones in close quarters. There is plenty of security present.
