I hope some of the vets told him that he is wrong to call for conservatives to surrender to the left.

Daniels should be running for POTUS in 2012. I hope he does.

He has already come out against social conservatives, we can’t support an anti-conservative for the Presidency, leave him where he is and be happy with that.

If he is so good; why would he say surrender to the left?

Mitch wants to switch the debate from Social issues to Fiscal Issues. A truce is not the same thing as a surrender, at least not in this case. One only needs to read his OpEd pieces in national magazines to understand that Mitch has not nor will not surrender on Social issues.

Mitch has already announced surrender and called for all conservatives to surrender, what he is really announcing is that he is against social conservatism and that his Presidency would reflect that political hostility to social conservatism.

From the Weekly Standard:

Mitch Daniels Doubles Down on “Truce”
Mark Hemingway writes:

I got a call this morning from Indiana Governor and rumored presidential candidate Mitch Daniels. In my column yesterday on his remarks about a “truce” on social issues, I left the door open to the possibility that the Governor’s remarks may not have been a “rhetorical misstep.”

Of course, if you know anything about Mitch Daniels in this respect he’s the anti-Obama. He’s far more concerned about communication than rhetoric, he’s thoughtful and rarely speaks without consideration. Rhetorical missteps are exceedingly rare.

And indeed, Daniels called me to say that he’s dead serious about the need for the next president to declare a truce. “It wasn’t something I just blurted out,” he told me. “It’s something I’ve been thinking about for a while.”

I like the guy, but when he said something to the effect that Reagan’s ideas were in the past he lost me. He ought to clarify his remarks.

You've been misinformed.

Gov. Daniels has done more to advance socially conservative causes, such as public prayer and the right to life, than probably any other sitting governor. The fact that medicine hucksters such as the former governor of Arkansas obsess over Daniels testifies as to how formidable a candidate he would be.

If he is a leader of social conservatives then he wouldn’t be calling for us to stop.

A social conservative warrior like you describe would not announce a desire and hope to drop the issues.

Conservatives do not announce that they don’t like the major part of conservatism and that we conservatives need to move on from it and give the left a breather for at least one presidential term.

The thing is that Mitch Daniels himself has made it clear that he is not a social conservative and has publicly revealed that he wants to block social conservatism, by using his influence to force conservatives to drop it.

That means that once he was in an independent position like President with no more races to run, then he would do what he is telling us he would do, be against social conservatism.

He is already campaigning on it.
