Death Panels Begin As Reform Takes Shape
IBD Editorials ^ | August 18, 2010 | Investors Business Daily staff

Medicine: After the recess appointment of a Medicare and Medicaid head, an FDA panel drops its endorsement of a widely used cancer drug. Another FDA-approved cancer therapy may not be paid for. It begins.

It didn't take long for the health care philosophy of Dr. Donald Berwick, President Obama's choice to head the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services, and an appointee we have labeled a "one-man death panel," to have an effect.

Berwick is an admirer of Britain's National Health Service and its National Institute for Clinical Excellence, with the Orwellian-acronym NICE.

"NICE," Berwick has said, "is extremely effective and a conscientious, valuable and — importantly — knowledge-building system." But NICE is really a system of rationing, through a bureaucratic formula for "cost-effectiveness," that has rushed untold numbers of Britons to an early grave.

Avastin, the marketing name for the drug bevacizumab, is the world's best-selling cancer drug. Used mainly to treat colon cancer, it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2006 after it was found that by cutting the blood flow to tumors, it helped in treating breast cancer.

An estimated 17,500 American women are treated with the drug each year. It is effective, having been shown to extend life by at least 20 months, but it is not cheap.

What incentive will there be for bringing new drugs on the market if the government won’t approve use? Lots of unintended consequences with ObamaCare - and most of them are nightmares...

“”The decision is not whether or not we will ration care,” Berwick says. “The decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.””

This is what happens when you elect a Communist.

The Obama administration's health care overhaul is all about cost and little about care.

Berwick has opined: "We can make a sensible social decision and say, 'Well, at this point, to have access to a particular additional benefit (new drug or medical intervention) is so expensive that our taxpayers have better use for those funds."

He's using the royal "We" here to tell us we have no say in the matter. IOW, they will decide what's good for us.

We are not allowed to say "Well, at this point, to have access to (OBAMACARE) is so expensive that (I) have better use for those funds."

Of course, the restrictions will not apply to the Politburo.

My only satisfaction is that the perps will not benefit from such drugs, either. If R&D is discouraged, pharmaceutical companies don’t R&D.

I have been cleaning up my files and found one that I saved and will continue to save where a government medical plan for which I was eligible could not decide which district I was in, so it denied all of my claims. I did various things, including, ultimately, contacting both of my senators, whose first efforts were deflected. On the other hand, when I tied into the Senators and explained their ineffectuality, one of them did put the fear of God into the bureaucracy such that I was contacted immediately by a fellow who said to call him day or night if there should be a problem, and please don’t waste time by going through that particular senator, because answering his mail required beaucoup documentation before a sign-off by a big-time bureaucrat who had not a clue about how poorly the system worked, and was paid very well not to.

“The decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.”

I remember when we were taught that "justice is blind." But that was back in America. Never mind.

They will when the drugs don't even exist because no one bothered to invent them because if they made a profit they'd be evil profiteers.

Every conservative candidate must expose this Hussein/Reid/Pelosi premeditated plan of genocide. IMO, these ghouls would make Hitler proud. The Hussein/Reid/Pelosi Final Solution against the American people was designed to eliminate whomever they choose reminiscent of 1933 Germany.

“ration with our eyes open”

simply means that those in the favor of the politburo will get care and those who aren’t will not.

But, of course, since the words “Death Panel” aren’t specifically used, the left will claim that they don’t exist.
