In 1969, John Wayne played Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit" -- a grizzled, drunken U.S. Marshal hired by a 14-year-old girl to track down her father's killer. The role ended up winning the aging Western star his first and only Oscar, prompting him to make a rare sequel -- "Rooster Cogburn" -- opposite Katherine Hepburn in 1975. The image of Wayne's craggy, eye-patched visage from "True Grit" has become a cinematic icon.
So film mavens everywhere were taken aback when it was announced last year that Joel and Ethan Coen would been making their own version of "True Grit." But don't expect a straight remake; this movie is based more closely on the Charles Portis novel. And Jeff Bridges, fresh off his Oscar win, was tapped to play Cogburn; that's right, the Duke has been replaced by the Dude.

Wouldn’t it be neat if TCM and AMC and every channel that plays movies could saturate the airwaves with “True Grit” and “Rooster Cogburn” the week before this travesty is released to theaters??

I went back and forth on this one a bit, but I’m actually fairly optimistic on this one.
I’m a fan of Wayne, but the original True Grit just wasn’t one of my favorite of his films. Kim Darby was too old for the part she played, and Glenn Campbell was sorta eh, IMHO. It wasn’t a bad flick, I just think the Duke did far better work in his career - The Shootist, for example.
As for the new film...I could give a flying leap about Matt Damon, but Jeff Bridges is a darn good actor. I think he’ll do well in the role of Cogburn. I’m also interested to see the Coen brothers’ take on a western.
Thank you for that info - I did not know that. I would have figured Lloyd was a pretty straight arrow; he usually played authority-type figures.
True Grit is fantastic.
(Spoken with The Duke's characteristic drawl) Speak for yourself, pilgrim. "True Grit" and "Rooster Cogburn and the Lady" were classics I could watch over and over again.

His son Jeff Bridges is a big lefty too. I liked the Big Lebowski but I will not see any of his films after I found out he is a major lib and Obama supporter.

Very few can be remade successfully. Ocean’s 11 was a monumental flop. In fact, most (all) of the recent remakes with the current movie players (They are in no way actors) have been flops.
If the Coen Brothers are remaking it, it will be nothing like anyone expects.
Couldn’t pay me to watch Matt Damon...I remember his vile remarks during the Obamanation takeover.
So is Psycho, but they remade that. I suspect, they will remake this one, too. And, it won’t be as good as the original.

I for one would be game to see how the Coens pull this one off. I like all of their stuff. I figure, every filmmaker makes great film after great film, then a stinker. Or they just keep making great films.
