Franken slams mosque opponents

Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) weighed in on the controversy over a proposed mosque near the World Trade Center site Wednesday, calling the recent opposition to the project "one of the most disgraceful things that I've heard."

Franken was born in Manhattan, and lived there again while writing for "Saturday Night Live" over a period of 20 years.

"I don’t know how many of you have been to New York, but if a building is two blocks away from anything, you can’t see it," he said of the mosque's proposed site. "It’s a community center. They’re going to have a gym. They’re going to have point guards. Muslim point guards."

Franken's comments were greeted with laughter and applause, Illinois's State Journal-Register reports.

“They [Republicans] do this every two years. They try to find a wedge issue, and they try to work it.”

"I don’t know how many of you have been to New York, but if a building is two blocks away from anything, you can’t see it,"

Franken, I don't know if you've been to THIS PART of New York lately, but the view in THIS PART of New York is not nearly as obstructed as in other parts of town, thanks in large part to the actions of some of those who would support the building of this shrine to their atrocity.

This isn’t a “Republican” issue Al, it’s an American issue. This whole country has turned into one big Saturday Night Live skit.

My question to Senator Franken and the mosque builders is this:

If this community center is to be so much more than just a mosque, why not just eliminate the controversy by eliminating the mosque from the building plans?

Keep the swimming pool, the cooking school, and all the rest; just delete the worship space from the community center and prohibit its use for any sort of worship/communal prayers (by any faith).

That takes the religious issue right out of it, N’est-ce pas?

they have eyes but refuse to see.

For Franken this is about making the electorate submit to him. HE DOES NOT CARE EITHER WAY.

btw: why does he always sound drunk?

“...That takes the religious issue right out of it, N’est-ce pas?”

Makes sense to me.

And their decision not to use the other option is what really makes it feel like a provocation.

Please Democrats continue to defend and talk about this. You are AGAINST the will of the American people.

I wish Bush would do an interview about this and say, “Either you are with us or you are with the terrorists.”

The Democrats are with the terrorists.

“I don’t know how many of you have been to New York, but if a building is two blocks away from anything, you can’t see it”

Sure, Al. That’s why our elites want to put the Ground Zero mosque two blocks from Ground Zero. (sarcasm)

I will post this on every mosque thread I encounter.

This is what they refer to as a victory mosque...it is what they build when they believe they have pummeled their enemy. It will be viewed as a western mecca...muslims from around the world will journey there on 9/11 to celebrate. It must be stopped!

No, Al.

Correction:

Sen. Al Franken ... is one of the most disgraceful things that I've heard.

During my first visit to New York City, there was a group of us seeing the sites. Two from England, one from Iowa, one from South Africa, and me from Michigan. I parked underneath the World Trade Center. We ended up taking the subway up to around the Empire State building near the UN. Toward the end of the day, we wanted to head back to the car, but one of the guys from England was afraid of the subway near night time. He apparently watched too much Kojak. So we walked what we thought was just a short distance to the World Trade center. After all, there it was, just down the road and plainly visible. It took us about 4 hours. Hey Franken, you ought to spend some time walking around.
