America... the land of the free and the home of the brave. At least that's what we hear when we sing the National Anthem.
Wait... are we still allowed to sing that song and express our patriotism? I know we are still the home of the brave, but it's become clearer that we are no longer the land of the free. Just ask "former" middle school football coach Bryan Glover, who wrote a song about Barack Obama and sent it to people on his e-mail list. Where did this expression of free speech land him?
The unemployment line, that's where.
As reported by OneNewsNow.com, Glover, a 26-year-old Christian, co-wrote the song "When You're Holding a Hammer, Everything Looks Like a Nail." The song "takes a dig at the current administration and what he believes to be the wrong moves for the U.S." According to the report, Glover sent the song to everyone in his personal e-mail list, "which included parents from Grassland Middle School, where he coached football."
That's when the trouble began. Within 90 minutes of sending out the song, Glover heard from his head coach that parents were asking that Glover be fired.
"When the coach first called me, he said his phone was blown up with parents saying that I was being politically incorrect -- quote, unquote -- if you will, and that some of them were even reading into racial overtones in the song," Glover explains.
Listen to the song for yourself and see if there is ANY reference to race in it at all. Why do people have to knee-jerk and claim racism just because someone doesn't like Obama? It's because they are so enamored with him and his socialist programs that they think anyone who doesn't like him must be a racist.

I would never have sent this out on a school or work related email list. I would have sent it out on a political email list.

If it's O.K. for a public school teacher to be preaching politics that we agree with, then don't be surprised when the vast majority of public school teachers start preaching politics that we do not agee with.

It’s not that he had a criticism of Obama or Biden. It’s that he sent out a political message to “everyone on his email list” which included parents in his district.
Sending anything contreversial like that - and even such mild bashing will be seen as contreversial - to parents in a school district is a career limiting, or ending, move.
Think about it this way: If he had written a similarly benign ditty about there being no God...or pro-abortion...what would the reaction here be? Many here would be going over the top demanding he be fired.
It’s not about the content. It’s about the idea in general.
That is not what is messed up in this country. Free speech means the government is not supposed to punish you or infringe on your right to speech. It never meant that your speech should have no consequences. It was always the case that you could get fired if your speech crossed the lines drawn by your employer.
What we have now is categories of protected speech and banned speech. If you curse whitey or rail against homophobia you cannot be fired. But if you pray at work or oppose liberal policies you can be fired at will. Now just using the wrong word can get you fired or end your career. No one wants to bother looking into the ideas or information contained in those words for actual harm to people. They just want to short cut the process by banning words.

People are dying for a job. Things are getting a lot worse - people may be fighting for food. You cannot give anyone a reason to fire you. He may have used his personal email but he probably pissed someone off. Getting fired is wrong but good luck fighting it. You cannot give anyone a reason to fire you and he did. Change the content of the message to a song about there being no God...or being pro-abortion message....Many of the people here would be going crazy demanding he be fired. And rightly so - but not because of the content. It’s because polarizing people is a dumb thing to do.
