The problem here is one, people are rather attached and used to the good old One Dollar Bill with George on the label. It's one of the biggest icons on the planet. Two, the "geniuses" at the mint have always come out with something that is either too large and cumbersome to handle, or it feels and looks no different than a friggin' quarter.
My understanding is using $1 coins would save a considerable amount of money for the mint since they last many times longer than notes, but like using feet, inches, yards, and pounds it's just not something we seem to want to "change".
I have always wondered about this commemorative coin BS.
There must be billions of dollars languishing in collection books and in desk drawers and bottles in the USA.
If it isn’t in circulation isn’t that like giving the Gov a free ride on debt owed?
