Oy Vey, Obama (Jews leaving Democratic party)
New York Times ^ | August 20, 2010 | Charles M. Blow

Posted on 08/21/2010 3:47:35 AM PDT by reaganaut1

Is President Obama good for the Jews? For more and more Jewish-Americans, the answer is no.

In a Pew Research Center report issued on Thursday and entitled “Growing Number of Americans Say Obama Is a Muslim” (tragic in its own right), there was another bit of bad news for Obama: the number of Jews who identify as Republican or as independents who lean Republican has increased by more than half since the year he was elected. At 33 percent it now stands at the highest level since the data have been kept. In 2008, the ratio of Democratic Jews to Republican Jews was far more than three to one. Now it’s less than two to one.

This is no doubt a reaction, at least in part, to the Obama administration having taken a hard rhetorical stance with Israel, while taking “special time and care on our relationship with the Muslim world,” as Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, put it in June. If that sounds like courtship, it is.

(It should be noted that the Pew poll was taken before Obama’s bold support for the right of Muslims to build a community center and mosque a few blocks north of ground zero.)

Some of the president’s most ardent critics and some of Israel’s staunchest American defenders — two groups that are by no means mutually exclusive — have seized on what they see as the administration’s unfair and unbalanced treatment of Israel and have taken their denunciations to the extremes.

In September 2009, Obama went before the United Nations and declared, “America does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements.”

I am a Jew who voted for the “old guy” in 2008. Why Jews persistently remain in the Liberal camp boils down to one word that Barry capitalized on:

CHANGE

Jews love change, Jews love new dynamics, Jews love progressive movements that may (but usually do not) change or reform the world. In short, Jews are starry-eyed and it takes more than a slap, punch or even blast (excuse the terror association) to wake them up. Any realistic-thinking Jew should have voted against Barry but, things being as they are, he used the catch-all phrase: CHANGE and the Jews went for it, hook, line and sinker...too bad. Now they're waking up?

Hopefully!!!!!!!!

Well, I think Jane probably would have changed her mind, but it is too late for that.

My liberal Jewish friend says there are hundreds of Japanese restaurants near Pearl Harbor.

My condolences for her friend Jane. Ask your liberal friend if she’d like a Nazi Party bund meeting hall within close proximity of Ground Zero, or better yet, next to the largest synagogue in NYC? Why not, after all, we must be tolerant of all people’s belief, regardless of the degree of hatred. And of course become diverse, so no one group is dominant and we can all get along and admire each others differences (even if we can’t agree on basic philosophical/religious beliefs), if that’s what she means by diverse. Your friend is adolescent in her mindset, hence her naivete and gullibility. Please have her study history to better understand the ugly, evil side of humanity that has always and will always exist in mankind, because we are imperfect and inclined to error and dare i say it, sin? Oh, I forgot, choices (bad ones, sin) are relevant, so when groups of totalitarian types (nazis, stalinists, maoists, islamists) decide to perform mass murder, it’s ok, they really don’t mean it, they’re making a choice that is comfortable for them. I’ll never understand the incredible stupidity and state of denial liberals find themselves in. It will get the rest of us killed.

Unlike Jimmy Carter, the Bummer has no excuse for not knowing exactly what the Moose hate and why and to what extents they will go to live out that hate. He lived with it up close and personal in Indonesia.

"The economy is a big part of it but what has sealed the cake is the admins treatment of Israel AND Iran’s nuclear plant."

No one has yet mentioned the dismantling of the greatest healthcare system in the world. Lots of Jews are doctors, and of those who are not, many love to GO to doctors.

There's been enough talk of Obamacare that they're starting to figure out what's coming, and as soon as that realization hits..... And in FLORIDA? I shudder....

“I would not be surprised if we start to see support from blacks peeling away from Obama as well.”

Not a chance.

So the devotion to the Democratic Party and leftist causes can be explained for historical reasons and is long-standing and more emotional than rational, even though the Dems have always had an antisemitic undercurrent in their party.

It has taken active hostility from a Dem president and legislature to finally get the attention of Jews, but I think some of the Jewish community might be taking a fresh look at their old allegiances.

Thank you so much for the wonderful background information, dear friend. I have a pretty good understanding of Jewish people because I've made a point to learn.

I think you're right. Obama has given reason for many to take a fresh look at old allegiances.

I am particularly pleased with Jewish Americans for Sarah Palin! The PFI has graciously allowed Jewish Americans for Sarah Palin to offer a kosher shabbaton for the evening of August 27, 2010, the evening before she appears with Glenn Beck at the Lincoln Memorial. Sarah is their keynote speaker.

:)

Jews are leaving the Democratic Party for reasons that have to do with the party platform. Yes, it is about support for Israel, which has been less ardent with the left-wing becoming increasingly shrill, vociferous, gaining influence on Party politics, platform, with more of a hostile, jaundiced eye towards Israel,Jewish political viewpoint.

It’s a leftover prejudice from the 1930s when republicans represented some sort of a country-club lifestyle which Jews weren’t welcome at. That’s the sort of prejudice which has a 25-year useful life i.e. the people responsible for whatever you don’t like about whatever it is will all be gone in that much time.

By this time next year, someone will ask the polling question: Is Obama an enemy or friend to the USA?

The lapdog media will be shocked by the response, no doubt.

You are correct and its a factor I failed to include.

Older Jews are very concerned about health care while younger Jews, who are/were for socialized health care, ultimately did not support the bill.

There have been quite a few protests down here against health care reform with many of the speakers being Jewish Doctors.

A shift away from the Dems may be an anomaly; a short term protest vote with the intent to wake up the Dems. The GOP would be foolish not to keep the Jewish vote on our side. There is no logical reason why religious Jews would not support Conservatives.

“The tide has turned and while 2% of the population can not sway an election...”

Your math is probably right, and I’m not going to ever argue math with anybody. But, I must point out that the Jewish population, while small, is very politically involved and is concentrated in NY, CA & FL, three big states.

Besides everything else, the Dems do not DESERVE the support of the Jews.

I hope history will remember Obama for 2 things, being the first black elected President and being the person who destroyed the Democratic Party.

Losing the Jews will be a good step in that direction.

People tend to get uncomfortable when someone in power over them chums around with a group that advocates their murder.

I’m sure Jane would also approve of Iranian nukes, and the testing of them 2 miles off the coast of tel aviv. After all, we shouldn’t be the only ones with nukes, seeing as how we cause all the worlds problems and all....

When Ahmadinnerjacket brings the second holocaust, Jews in the media will preach restraint, while their brethren are slaughtered. Or they’ll just ignore it altogether.

Most NY Jews are secular. They are not driven by their heritage or beliefs any more than a Catholic that votes democrat. I’m have mexican heritage but think we should control our borders. My brothers think there’s nothing wrong with millions of Mexicans coming here to work. Which just goes to show you that I got all the brains in the family.
