Dumbest GOP Meme Yet: Does The President Deserve A Vacation? (Barf Alert)
Outside the Beltway ^ | 8/22/2010 | Doug Mataconis

Posted on 08/22/2010 2:05:56 PM PDT by Qbert

As silly season in Washington continues, the Republican Party has decided to make it even sillier:

VINEYARD HAVEN, MASS. — For the second straight year, the first family has landed on this island of quaint seaside towns, second homes and working farms for a late-summer getaway.

But this year, more so than last, political opponents are trying to hang a question over the visit: Does President Obama deserve a vacation? The Republican National Committee has taken to calling Obama “the Clark Griswold president,” a mocking reference to the Chevy Chase character in National Lampoon’s “Vacation” movies. With unemployment claims climbing again, the GOP was hoping its criticism would have a certain national resonance. And maybe it will.

One potential complication: Obama has spent far less time on vacation than his Republican predecessor, George W. Bush, had at this point in his presidency.

[Snip]

That is fairly obvious, of course, considering that it is only the vociferous partisans that seem to bring this issue up time and time again when Presidents engage in the most inane types of leisure activities. Steven Taylor put it best, I think, when he talked about the golf meme back in June:

First, presidents deserve some down time.  Do we really want them to have no rest and relaxation?

Second, conservatives in particular, who argue that we should recognize and accept the limitations of government should recognize that having a president work 24/7 is an inefficacious desire.

[Snip]

So let the President golf, let him go to Martha’s Vineyard.

One can argue about the President’s performance in office, and I largely think he’s done a pretty bad job so far, but to criticize him for stuff like this is petty and stupid.

I like to comment withis quote from the People's Cube (www.peoplescube.com):

White House revises policy to announce when President is at work instead of announcing when he is going on vacation.

I don’t remember Bush taking ANY vacations during Katrina or 9/11. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t he spend his “off-time” mostly working on his ranch? Didn’t he handle matters frequently from his ranch? I don’t see the comparison. I don’t ever remember Laura taking personal trip to Spain with friends either. Did I miss something?

The more time he spends vacationing on the taxpayer dollar, the less time he’ll have in the office spending the taxpayer’s grandchildren’s dollars.

“First, I don’t buy this idea that President Bush spent more time on vacation than Obama. The media has lied about similar things (claimed that Pres. Bush hadn’t gone to Arlington on Memorial Day either - except a FReeper here linked the speech Pres. Bush gave at Arlington when he supposedly wasn’t there)...”

Yeah, good points- wouldn’t surprise me.

And how do we *really* know what Obama is doing “presidential-wise” while on vacation? His advisors of course will say that he’s getting daily briefings, etc. but given the lack of transparency and amount of dishonesty with these people, who knows whether this is true or not?

It's much easier to track the Usurper's days in the office.

What are we up to over the last 2 years, minus Wagyu beef parties...Day 90 maybe?

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.

Pres. Bush had working vacations...not hiding vacations

The loon deserves a sentence, not a vacation.

Hopefully, the former will replace the latter if Repubs manage to find the testosterone and grow a pair sometimes in the next millenium.

I don’t recall any president ever taking a “news free” vacation.

Apparently obummer thinks this is a part time job.

Should the President and his family go on extravagant trip after trip wearing the latest most expensive designer clothes and blowing 100’s of thousands of dollars while the American economy burns... no.

Even Jimmah figured that one out.

The question shouldn't be if the president deserves a vacation, as that is petty.

The question is if the president deserves the most lavish luxurious royal vacation that is possible?

The answer is no, the president does not deserve royal treatment on our dime.

Israel and Iran are about to go head to head, our unemployment figures are going ever skyward, police in NY are now having to contend with protesters and supporters of this Victory Mosque ( no violence yet, but you really think it will stay peaceful?), our borders are more unstable than ever, and this so-called president is off in Martha’s Vineyard deciding what kind of ice cream to try today. Absolutely pathetic.

The O’bozo’s had to cut one vacation short so they could start the next one on time.

At least when he is on the golf course he isn’t poisoning America with more of his simplistic socialist claptrap.

Ruining a world beating economy and flushing 200 years of history down the crapper is a hard job of work; the man deserves his days of leisure. Let him rest up while the rest of us little people scrabble to hold on our little pieces of the American Dream. He’ll pick up where he left off all too soon enough.

Key word here is “A.” Not five. One.

Amazing, isn't it, that this needs to be pointed out?

So the fact that the guy is basically on vacation for a month-a-half (separated by a bunch of fundraisers) before he takes his “official” once a year vacation is...irrelevant?

A vacation is not several separate and distinct spots, time frames, regardless you're hitting the campaign stop during them -- all that means is that he and his family won't be spending their money on them. Yes, that is irrelvant, as is your idea that a month-and-a-half *vacation* is somehow not a vacation before he takes his "official" vacation -- he's the president, not a school teacher who gets the summer break because of the schedule.

I also resent the use of the word "deserve" here.
