Embattled Congressman Charlie Rangel came out in support of the Ground Zero mosque yesterday, saying people "should be cooperative."

Rangel said the issue is not political.

"It's so painful that Republicans and Democrats are using religion as a political tool," Rangel said. "The Constitution is clear," the pol said at a charity event in Harlem.

From the Federal level it doesn’t matter if the NYrs don’t want it or not. The Fed will not listen to the locals when it comes to these matters. Sleep well.

You have a perfect right to protest it. In fact you have a perfect right to protest anything (as long as you don't impinge on other people's rights).

However, unless someone can tell me otherwise, they have a perfect right to build it. I mean, I think it's wrong, and certainly incredibly insensitive, but I can't think of any legal reason it can't be built.

Their right to build the mosque is very much dependent upon where the funding is coming from in the Middle East.

Foreigners build things in the US all the time. You would have to prove the money was illegally obtained and that would be very hard to do.

If that money is from any group on the State Department's list of terrorism, then the funding of the mosque is against the law. The law is the law. No two ways about it.

The law is the law ok, but of course the muslims know it as well as you do. I can absolutely guarantee that the funding from this will not be coming from any group on any restricted list. They are too smart to miss that one.

Unless they open their books or are forced to open their books then it is purely a guess as to where the funding is coming from. And funding doesn’t have to be direct to come from a terror group.

Funding certainly doesn't have to be direct to come from a terror group, but proving that the source is a terror group is quite another matter. I don't personally think that forcing them to "open their books" is going to reveal anything. They will have covered that base. And the mere fact of investigating their financial affairs will enable them to cry "foul" and "prejudice" and "intolerance", which of course suits them fine. There's plenty of stupid people who will believe such charges.

Conservatives have to learn to box clever against these people. It often seems that they know how to play the PR game and we don't. So here's some ideas. Let them build their mosque, but acquire land next to it and build a church there. Or better a synagogue. Or an abatoir. Or a memorial to the fallen that shows a film of the planes slamming into the towers on a loop. If it's legal for them to build, it's legal for anyone else too. After all, they can hardly argue that building such things next to their mosque is "inappropriate". This proposed mosque is sheer provocation. So instead of complaining, let's provoke back. In all likelihood they would drop the plans to build if they knew that was going to happen.
