Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, has heard from sources within Apple that the company will launch its all-new iTV set top box, powered by the iOS operating system, in September for $99.
Rose posted on his blog that he believes the revamped and renamed Apple TV hardware will "change everything" for a number of reasons, including the addition of TV applications written for the iOS operating system. Like the iPhone and iPad, Apple's new iTV will have access to the App Store where users will be able to download software to run on their device, he said.
With these applications, he said, content providers will be able to provide iTV owners "a la carte" stations that Rose believes will change the way people watch content on their television.
"With Apple's iAds, content producers (eg. ABC/NBC/etc.) can directly monetize and distribute their content," he said. "This will eventually destroy the television side of the cable and satellite industry, as your only requirement to access these on-demand stations will be an internet connection. Say goodbye to your monthly cable bill."

I’m skeptical but then again the iPad struck me as a product that would flop and Apple has made an absolute killing with it. I guess then that I should recuse myself from passing judgement. Apple is a company that I thought was dead fifteen years ago and now they are one of the great success stories in American business.
Did that 20 years ago.
I still think the iPad looks extremely dorky. But, whatever.

I, for one, will miss Sabado Gigante.
Say goodbye to your monthly cable bill.

It is very much a niche product, as will this new “game changer” be.
I think it looks cool and the interface is really good. I just can’t see anything i’d use it for and have no desire to buy one.
” Say goodbye to your monthly cable bill. “
Already did - HULU works just fine with an old (WIN XP) computer and the lowest speed DSL — without lining Apple’s Liberal pockets.....
Call it a niche product if you wish but if it is then its in an awfully big niche. They sold a million in their first month and another million in the second month. They’ve now sold more than three million.
I would love to pick out my own stations. The Dish Network did something similar, but it didn’t last very long.
My wife would kill me if I got rid of her telenovelas.
So, instead, you line Microsoft’s liberal pockets, NBC’s liberal pockets, etc., etc.
Unfortunately, ALL the big tech companies are majority-liberal.
Jejejeje
I used to work for Telemundo.
I miss Walter Mercado!
Not missing it, are you. *\;-)
Seriously, I travel a lot and from time to time would check what's on the hotel TV. I admit the History Channel sometimes had interesting programs. But then somewhere it became 24/7 "Let's drive big rigs over ice" or something like that except when it aired something about pawnshops.
I know I turned a hotel TV on sometime this year but don't remember when. It didn't stay on for long.
Goodbye Comcast!
Apple TV version 2?
Netflix, Hulu, Youtube are already on Xbox and Wii... How will this be different, other than being from Apple?
Busty girl!
Not quite so fast. Companies like ComCRAP for example have download caps (at least in my area) which can easily be exceeded by downloading hi-Def movies from NetFlix for example.
ComCRAP isn't going to idly by while their Cable TV revenues disintegrate, they'll simply raise their rates for high-speed broadband access to make up the difference. I suspect other cable tv providers that provide broadband internet access will do the same.
By the way, Apple's charges for content are on the pricey side IMO. I have an iPad and why should I have to pay to watch content on Hulu with my iPad when I can do it with my PC for free? I can also go to USA Network's home page and watch episodes of "Burn Notice" for free on my PC so why would I pay $2.99/episode to watch it on my iPad?
Apple may think it has a nice money train going for itself, but people are going to get tired quickly of paying for content on an iPad or iPHone when that same content on a PC is "free", save for the cost of the broadband access.
Just my .02, YMMV.
I have a question for ya, someone told me that the family that owns Telemundo are named Bosque (my last name), is that true?
Really, Dish. how. I have disk and of the 125 channels I have, I’d only order about 15 of them.
I have an Apple TV and I love it and I haven’t had cable for over 6 years.
However, there are many, many months that I pay more for my movies and shows through the iTunes store than I would for say... entry-level cable.
I prefer it though and if they open up the AppleTV so that it can do Hulu and Netflix plus iTunes, &c for $99, (plus give me a USB for an external hard drive) then yes - it would be a revolution and would move me far, far beyond ever wanting cable again.
I don’t know, I got out of it 15 years ago.
I would probably have only about 25 stations at the most, if I had my choice.
Oh. Thanks.
Well, for one thing, it's no longer going to be FREE via the internet and a PC.
A huge 'purge' of free movie sites is going on, with copyright-active movies being removed. Several Free movie sites were entirely removed, due to lawsuits, just recently.
Even YOUTUBE is gearing up to force you to pay for watching videos.
Did you know that guy is a German Jew whose parents fled to Chile to scape the Nazis? Amazing life story.
Cause there is no right to view content on the Internet for free..
Informative post, thanks. I didn't know these things. The only thing I really "watch" anyway are a handful of programs mostly that I already named, and occasionally Fox News/Fox Business News.
Frankly I could do without the TV, I have hobbies that keep me occupied anyway. :-)
I have a Mac Mini hooked to my TV via HDMI and watch shows from the Internet more than I do my cable. in fact I am considering canceling cable completely. I can watch news and get just about everything via HULU.com and others...
Oh hell yes.
True. Don Francisco is really one of the good guys. Sabado Gigante in many ways is a throwback to the Golden Age of Television, part variety show, part game show.
Please cite where I said there was 'right.'
Question, I don’t watch cable or tv except for NCIS online, but my mother watches syfy, turner classic, hallmark, and the soaps. So. Does she have to keep comcast?

Those who think they have "gotten rid of their cable bill" by switching to Internet TV of some sort are currently being subsidized by the people who explicitly pay for their TV bandwidth. If devices like this take off, that will have to end. Everyone will then see 'caps' like ComCast has, to keep people from hogging Internet bandwidth by filling it with TV bandwidth that they aren't paying for. By "this changes everything," the guy probably means "this means the end of flat-rate monthly Internet service, and a return to paying for bits used." |

And say hello to an all new, even bigger bill. Anyone who thinks they won't get knicked for the content is deluded. $99 for the set top box won't be the end of it. Apple doesn't do anything without a content revenue stream.
But there are other issues....now a producer of tv or cable content sells to a channel. The channels sell to cable company who sells to consumers. But what if producer sell to me only what I want and not the other 200 channels that the cable company forces me to buy that I don’t want. Volume could actually go down as individuals pick only the content that they want. This can’t come fast enough. The middle men (cable companies) are about to get the $hit kicked out of them.
Yeah the revenue stream from commercials.

If you want on or off the Mac Ping List, Freepmail me.

I liked the iTunes model better. Buy your episodes, store them on your hard drive and play them as desired. I downloaded a few episodes and thought the quality was adequate but I run PCs, Macs, and streamers from three different manufacturers, I never did get the programming to all of my TVs in a reliable manner.
I’m disappointed that they are going to a streaming only model. I feel better purchasing having a copy on my own hard drive. That and my high speed internet is high speed in name only, streaming video is not a satisfying experience in the danger household.
I pay for cable at my business. I have a DVD recorder that I use to save shows I want to watch at home. I rip the discs, edit the commercials convert to MP4 and load it to my server. That is a whole lot of work, I would be happy to pay a couple of bucks for a DRM free episode that I can load to my server or put on my phone at my convenience. I guess I’m just dreaming.
You and me both, buddy.
Apple is the only computer company who does not make political contributions. You may have other reasons for not liking Apple but you can scratch that one.
It won’t work. The cable providers also do the internet in many cases. Those such as Time Warner have already been talking about billing as a relation to bandwidth. This gadget will ensure that they do. We will all be paying more for internet.
And the MicroSofties need to remember that it is Microsoft that put the MS in MSNBC.
I predict Apple will sell one billion of these new iTVs.
